You need to clear out each coach’s profile by winning against them in battle (and earning their gift) and inviting/talking to them 3 separate times. After you do they trade with you and the profile has a gold frame.
Here are the unlocks:
3 gold profiles - Clavell and Academy staff
5 gold profiles - Rika and Poppy
8 gold profiles (may require all GLs instead) - Geeta
All 20 unlocks the secret final boss, Saffron/Cyrano, whom you must beat in a full double battle. He trades you the Shiny Blitzle there.
Be mindful that some characters when paired together will start a conversation with each other first before you can engage with them. So it will take time.
Nemona, Arven, and Penny are unlocked separately and do not count towards the rewards.
