Obviously our professor had a similar encounter with an alternate universe version of us who gave them Briar's book but didn't take their copy of the book; meanwhile, the professor WE interacted with ended up with Briar's book but gave us their book, which means that events on whatever timeline they were actually from didn't unfold the way they did in our own.
It's multiversal fuckery, not time travel.
