this only really applies to gen 1, because it was made back when game freak didn't know they were going to make dozens of other games. the rest you can just assume in-universe people know about the other pokemon but they're just never mentioned.

If you go to Japan you'll still see African animals like giraffes, zebras, elephants, lions etc in zoos, on posters, as toys, in books, in print and ads, mentioned by people etc, meanwhile in every Pokemon game, the only Pokemon you ever see brought up anywhere are the ones that existed in previous game + the ones introduced in the new game's region, and nothing else.

It's retroactively silly that Arceus the Pokegod was never even once brought up in whole three game generations for such an important concept, or that a Pokemon as common in Sinnoh as Bidoof has zero presence in Johto or Kanto. We all understand why that's the case from a meta perspective, but from a worldbuilding perspective it makes everyone in-universe look like retards.

Even when they knew they were going to make a shit ton of games, they never tried to have "mystery" Pokemon teases from other regions that are only referenced in pictures or mentioned by people but not actually available in the game. For example imagine an NPC in Gold/Silver talking about Plusle and Minun, that won't even be seen until Ruby/Sapphire.

This is part of it too, each game pretends the player is making all these discoveries when everything but the unique legendary mons should have been explored to death by now.

It makes perfect sense. No one knew about animals outside of their respective regions for most of human history. It took centuries of exploring and colonization to catalogue the animals we now know exist and even to this day, we still keep finding new ones hiding under our noses.

Those have all already elapsed in the world of Pokemon given that it's set in current day and not in the 1300s.

Yeah but shit like Zigzagoon is as common in Hoenn as raccoons are in America, and it's silly that it needs discovering by a 10 year old, and doesn't exist as e.g. a common toy or design motif in Kanto the way raccoons are popular as cartoon characters.

It's not the fact that you're only documenting the pokemon in your region, it's the fact that say, anyone in Hoenn, would not have heard of the most common rodent shitmon in sinnoh/unova/galar etc, not even one. At that point you just have to acknowledge the limits of a video game, the only way to placate your autism here would be with retroactive patches that keep things constantly updated

i wouldn't say its fair to call it a gripe with worldbuilding when you literally want all games and regions to be futureproofed with mentions of some regions and designs that don't exist yet

The Arceus example is specially silly since not only is he completely irrelevant to every game before and after gen 4, he is also pretty irrelevant within Sinnoh as well outside of a single empty building.

Yeah but it's an issue I have with the very premise of the Pokemon world, if it was about humans landing on a foreign continent and exploring and freshly settling new lands it'd make sense to have every Pokemon be unknown to previous humans in earlier areas, or if it was about monsters that just started appearing in our world one day that didn't exist since time immemorial (and were gods that created humans), or if it was about an alien planet/monster dimension crossover/spirits etc.

There's probably a way for the worldbuilding premise to accommodate their game logic but they didn't even really try, as seen with the Pokedex entries referencing IRL animals which we never see.

You discover new Pokemon in real time when you play gen 1 and 2.

3 onwards every Pokemon has always been there so you the player naturally only have access to the regional dex. Doesn't mean that in-universe people don't know about other Pokémon from future gens, only that there's no reason to mention them since they're not native. You may know that elephants and giraffes exist but how often will you mention them in regular conversation?

The exceptions are crossgen evos, which much like gen 2 Pokemon, are implied also to be discovered in real time by the player or very recently in the chronology of the lore.

If PLA is to be believed, people exploring the pokemon world is a decently recent development.

You overestimate the popularity of raccoons and their impact in pop culture. Most people have no idea what they are in the same way most people have no idea what a tanuki is. Just because something is ubiquitous to one region, it doesn't mean it is common knowledge to the rest of the world.

Elephants are native to regions far away from where I live and huge and unwieldy and hard to transport, and yet I can still see them in the zoo, or in cartoons, or ads, as toys, in movies, use them in phrases (elephant in the room), in comparisons (ears big as an elephant), etc. If something is interesting but uncommon, it only increases people's curiosity.

People of every region have clearly been familiar with the pokemon of their region long before the player is given a pokedex.

You're basically asking why don't all potential Pokemon that will ever exist exist right now, which is impossible to do. The Safari zones are already examples of "non-native" Pokemon, considering Pokemon like Tauros and Kangaskhan weren't caught natively in Kanto. Pokemon like Crawdaunt and Yungoos are also explicitly stated to be from foreign regions.

a comprehensive encyclopedia hasn't been written. you are cataloging all of the pokemon in the region and getting information on them so that when an encyclopedia is eventually written, it's comprehensive.

Anon I've already said that NPCs do mention Pokemon from "not the regions introduced thus far." A lot of Safari Zone Pokemon and some explicitly invasive species like Gumshoos and Crawdaunt.

When you're sweeping broken glass, you get the big chunks out of the way basically immediately, and then you have to pore over the remaining tiny shards, IRL animal discovery and cataloging is basically at the level where we're trying to find those tiny elusive shards since the big obvious stuff is common knowledge by now.

It does not work like that in the Pokemon world, even the most common Pokemon you can see littering the streets in Alola, Galar, Paldea etc are complete unknowns to everyone and everywhere in the previous regions, and on a region level professors somehow need 10 year olds to catalogue common rats and birds for their scientific research even though the grass outside their lab is teeming with them, as if they were the slippery unique Legendary beasts.

Unpaid internships are the backbone of scientific research. Just because the grass behind their house is filled with pokemon doesn't mean the professor has to go get the data themselves.
It is also worth mentioning most professors specialize in and task the player with investigating particular mechanics, like breeding, weather, evolution, moves, etc, or particular gimmicks unique to those regions, like mega evolution or gigantamax, and not just blindly cataloging pokemon.

Yes because they can just pick up a book or look up basic data for common domestic animals/Pokemon gathered hundreds of years ago
