I totally get the whole "everyone has their own interpretation" thing, but they kind of treated these subjective interpretations as objective/infalliable instead of speculation and headcanon, to the point of acting like the author genuinely DID personally intend whatever the fuck nonsense you or your classmates came up with, outright putting words in their mouth. Did any other burgers get these kinds of vibes when being taught that stuff or did the schools I go to just particularly suck?

I had english teachers from the start of Jr. High to the end of High School insist upon the idea that the author intended everything. It never occurred to me until adulthood that maybe a work of art can be interpreted by its consumer in their own way and that you might even see something there that the author didn't put in on purpose. I think "the death of the author" needs to be taught way, way sooner. But the problem is, you can't really teach a kid or a teenager an idea like "What the authority figure thinks or means is irrelevant; what matters is what YOU think" without either turning them into a delinquent or giving them the impression that art is dumb and doesn't matter. Or just confusing them. Kids are fucking dumb.

Man now I'm going off on a tangent because I resented a lot of my english teachers for being, in my opinion, the dumbest fucking teachers in school. In 10th or 11th grade I had a teacher who pronounced "necromancy" as "neck ROM un see" and refused to believe me when I pointedthat I knew this word from video games and DnD. I think the word came up in either The Hunchback of Notre Dame or The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn, I forget which. The same teacher insisted that I write my full name on tests and homework (I go by Dave; she wanted me to call myself David) and even took a point off of every assignment whenever I put my preferred name on it. What the hell was that supposed to teach me? Same teacher was shockingly bad at math, seemingly not knowing her friggin times tables. I'm 33 years old and I'm still salty about her.

Something I never see discussed is the difference between a computer monitor and a phone screen when it comes to formatting. I've read things that looked fine on my phone, then looked at them on my computer and been aghast at how terrible the formatting was. For example, no indenting looks fine to me on mobile but is nigh unreadable on a computer. Something about the way my eyes scan for the next paragraph and the difference in screen space, I guess.

And case in point, you can find tons of people slurping up the shittiest most badly written ESL'ed Ash Self-Inserter Serena Schizo fanfic out there.
The point is that at the end of the day this is a fanfic, no one is expecting high literature, and while of course there's nothing bad about wanting to write something good and proper, you shouldn't become so obsessed with the idea that you don't ever write down even a single word because "it would be bad" or "no one will care about it".
Granted, it depends. If your ultimate goal is to make all the patreonbucks then that's a wholly different matter.
But if you just wanna put out your silly headcanon idea? Your SI journey? Just write nigga.

What's your opinions on fics with background music? I don't mean "I wrote this fic based on my favorite My Chemical Romance song," just ones with instrumental tracks or ambience linked here or there.
I don't see it often, but I find it really helps me focus and can help set the mood for the scene. At this point I just play vaguely fitting music in the background if the fic doesn't have any.
Anything with vocals has the opposite effect though, the words jumble up in my head with whatever I'm trying to read and I have to reread everything multiple times before finally pausing the damn thing. Just because a certain song inspired you doesn't mean it should go anywhere near your work.

Background music for every situation feels tiresome to me even if I like it occasionally. It gets especially annoying during frequent tone changes that require new BGM, and the constant links can be immersion breaking, but if no links are provided then the BGM could clash wit the new tone.
Used very rarely it's nice. When "Rock Falls, Everybody Dies" linked a BGM for it's final chapter, it hit very hard for what was otherwise a shitpost story.

What's the most you've ever scrapped? I ended up walking away from a 6.9k word chapter draft (and the story as a whole) after realizing I was forcing myself and not really having any fun on the project anymore. I'd probably still be working on that mess of a story if I hadn't gotten too sick to write for a while and gotten to thinking "Why am I dreading going back to this? Why do I feel relaxed now that I have an excuse not to touch it for a while? Even working on some spur-of-the-moment vignette feels better thsn going back."
Sometimes you gotta just cut your losses, sunk cost mindset will just lead to you sinking it even further to trap yourself in even harder when you're miserable working on the next chapter. Obviously you should have some discipline, and don't laze around never writing anything because you "don't feel like it"... but writing's a hobby, and if it isn't some big long-running story with a bunch of readers awaiting the next entry, you've got to recognize when you have no real reason to actually continue.

I got to 6k words with the one I'm currently working on and scrapped it to change a core plot point. Then I got to ~5k words and did it again. Here I am, at 8k words, nearly doing it a third time since another retcon has me going back and carefully editing everything.
I've been enjoying the process since these are characters and a story I'm attached to, but I've definitely felt some burn out. If this weren't Pokemon I would have quit by now.

When you read a book you have one single format template. There is no weird subscript words, popup entries with extra-tiny font, graphics in-text-bloc, etc. Both your mind and eyes adjust to the given static format and you read it without an issue.

There is no static template or standardized format on the internet. Some shit like plebbit or twatter also go out o the way to make basic reading as hard fucking possible so people have to resort to all kinds of formatting cheats to make it bearable.

When you're inserting realism, remember that it's a fantasy setting. It has clarke-tech and has a modern set dressing, but it's a world full of magical beasts with kids going on wish fulfillment journeys. You make your characters act and talk like rational, logical human beings, and have peoples' actions have consequences that make sense. You don't need to do more than that.

I wrote and partially coded an "introduction" for a visual novel that clocked in at 22k words and decided I hated it and threw out everything except for the very first scene, rewriting all of it to be more interactive and to change major plot beats. I also threw out the principle antagonist and downgraded a major supporting character to a pretty minor one. It's the Marnie VN I'm working on.

Separating paragraphs with an empty line helps break it up and not look like a giant wall of text. Indenting the paragraphs does the same thing, though, since it makes the left side of the text not look like a homogenous straight line.

So if you’re indenting, like most books do, then you don’t need an empty line between each paragraph, which is why you don’t see it in printed books. But if you don’t indent, it’s a good idea to leave empty spaces.

It depends ds on how much the story focuses on the pokemon. If the pokemon is a main character, I would dedicate a whole chapter, but if the story is about the trainers 1st, it'll only get a sentence or two unless it is the Trainer's main pokemon, then it can be a pivotal moment.

I remember that Vladimir Putin, Dane Cook, and Deion Sanders actually exist in our world. The same universe that gave us the middle east clusterfuck also gave us the Pokemon franchise. "Realism" should include the worst that nature and humanity have to offer, because that does exist, but it's not the totality of it and you don't have to concentrate on it. A Pokemon world that's realistic can be wholesome, technical, mundane, funny, adventurous, and melancholic- all of it combined, nothing left out. Most of all, I think a realistic fictional setting should bear in mind it exists as an incomprehensibly vast collection of mundane physical interactions- everything has a cause and effect, down to the tiniest subatomic particle. My bigger point is that we have evil doers in reality- true- but anon seemed concerned that if your fic is all about evil-doers, war, poverty, exploitation, etc, then of course your fic is going to come off as grimdark fantasy. Reality has that, but it also has goofballs (Kiffin), sarcastic wits (Leach god rest his soul), cheaters (Harbaugh), corporate CEOs (Saban), literal who's (Lea), and all the rest of the cast.
For a Pokemon fic striving for realism, try branching out into other tones, archetypes, don't be afraid to explore. Balance darkness with humor, drama with slice of life, heroic action with technical detail.

More seriously, Pokemon are able to attempt to evolve at any time if they feel the need. If they lack the physical fitness and health for it, it can be risky since it throws their body into overdrive. Like those stories about people trying to work out beyond their level and having a heart attack. The harder they push themselves, the faster they can get through it, but the harder it is on the body. Evolution is associated with shorter lifespans, which is worse the later in life the evolution happens.

Evolution can regenerate lost limbs and organs in the process. That combined with the longer lifespan for elderly unevolved Pokemon means there's reasons for an owned or wild Pokemon to pass on evolving, just because they're in a comfortable place where it's not necessary or to save it for an emergency.

I'm making a Colosseum hack that's pretty much a fan fic made from scratch. The original game has an interesting setting and cinematic intro, but not much else. XD, on the other hand, plays out too much like a Saturday morning cartoon, both in its narrative and content, so I don't want to use it.
The big twist is that Miror B. is a gay double-agent who infiltrated Cipher by delivering them the Suicune he was endowed by his lover, Eusine. I'm not some tranny; these two have been basically canonical faggots from the very beginning and I think they incidentally pair well for my purposes.
The rub is that I don't know how to write this without coming off like a poltard or overt tranny sympathizer (to each their own).

I'm kind of giving the super summarized version, but it's meant to be that she at first looks really intimidating and frightening with a bloodthirsty plan, but the more the MC encounters her and learns about her they realize she's in the throes of a total mental breakdown and is losing her grip on reality. Most of human-like and psychics go into IG1, for obvious reasons (super-intelligent being like Arceus are there as well). Those species that don't quite reach the average human IQ but can get very, very close go into IG2 (eevolutions, etc).

Is this complaining the concept of moves exist or that move names are being used, because the former is still confusing but the later is there because it's difficult to understand what's going on when people are shouting random words and we're supposed to remember what they mean when it was mentioned maybe once a few chapters ago one time.

Moves are like common spells in a fantasy setting. They're there for good reasons. For one, it lays down at least some ground rules for combat and how the world works, which is incredibly important because if there's no rules then the reader won't care about conflict since everything's bullshit made up on the spot by the author(sure, authors still make up bullshit even with rules, but that ground level of what's expected is still incredibly important). Aside from the ESL awkwardness of this phrase, yes, animals. My own pet peeve are fics where average Pokemon show human-level intelligence, and especially talking Pokemon. It breaks the immersion for me; doesn't jive with the central premise of sanitized dogfighting that is Pokemon.

As a trainer of something like Donphan you should know beforehand this an happen and either have a mate for it at hand or don't bring it out during the "season"/send to Sanctuary/Pokecenter that handles this.

I personally avoid this because in my headshotgun Pokemon that evolved outside of wilderness (in domestic environment/human society) dont have heat cycles. It simple makes no sense for evolution to go that way outside of wilderness, because in wild life this is justified - you ALWAYS need to breed for species to survive so the nature ensures this (this is why female ferrets literally die if they dont mate). And it also a solid and logically defendable position, due to the magic of evolution of Pokemon that happens in an instant. Domestic condition/life in human's society -- human's world -- does not require breeding machine to be a clockwork and in fact is harmful, so the evolution does the pragmatic thing as always, just in a span of few seconds, not millennia.

I'm of the opinion that the less my reader has to use google to understand what I'm writing, the better. I'll drop a couple of sentences of description if it's something a character is seeing for the first time, otherwise I'll stick with a quick basic 'colour/shape' and occasionally sprinkling in quick descriptors in with the normal writing.

I know liberal arts and literature colleges and I can tell you death of the author is an absolute poison to literary discussion and that shit does not help students in any way. People start engaging with works even less because now they can say whatever the shit they want and coerce the work to fit their worldview.

Literary analysis at least has a method that cares about facts and details, about both the author's life and the exacts within the fiction. Subjective Analysis is just musing on the undefinable and has no basis on being used within discussions.

The problem is most teachers can't properly explain why the accepted meaning of a work is why it is, and also they're retarded 90% of the time. But subjective analysis is horrid and part of the reason literature gave way to critical feminist or critical race analyses of works. It's the un-rationalization of critique.

Yeah that's the thing with English teachers: you have to explicitly enroll into a class that specializes in teaching English grammar, notably any writing classes at the time. If you don't specify, you get shoved into language arts instead, which is where you're forced to read and interpret text. There's a bit of cross interfacing with each of the classes, but that's how's it's supposed to go. Most people don't know this until it's too late and they struggled through the wrong part of English and graduated.

Don't get me wrong, there may be some useful stuff in language arts, but I believe there is a difference in writing stories that are actually competent, sound and reasonable with limited to no grammatical error, and reading/interpreting someone else's work and analyzing it down to a T, author's intent or otherwise. I still think it's bullshit that the default is the language arts though.

Durable humans work better with the idea that humans and Pokemon are related, too.

Bringing up pokedex entries is pretty unfair, since most of them are nonsensical.
Like according to dex diglett should have major debuff from just fighting under sunlight. Gardevoir should have signature moves that creates mini black holes. Luxray has x-ray eyesight, capable of seeing through "everything". Goodra has puches with strength "equivalent of the force of a hundred pro boxers", which is nothing compared to pre-evo which mucus "will dissolve anything"

Actually Goomy entire evolution line is weird as fuck biologically according to pokedex
Let's start with Goomy. Most of its body is made of water. Water which it breathes through, cause if it dries out, it suffocates and dies. The horns on its "head" have all 5 senses. That's right, goomy feels, hears, sees, smells and tastes through those 4 protrusions. Because of that they are super sensitive, and just grabbing them will shock Goomy enough to be unable to move.
Sliggoo apparently realized its horns make eyes redundant, because they don't work. That's right, those eyes are just for show and Sliggoo can't see anything through them. Also all vital organs, like heart and tiny brain are localized entirely inside protrusion on its back. The tiny brain can't think of anything else but food and how to run away. It has no teeth, so all food needs to be dissolved, to then be slurped up.
Goodra pokedex entry unfortunately doesn't note anything too special biologically. All that can be gathered is that Goodra's blind eyes can cry, has developed a thick layer of fat, and now can use its once too sensitive horns to violently attack. Also it lost the bump on its back, so where did all the vital organs went? Gone? Not needed anymore?

In my story, I've kinda worked around Cynthia being the strongest ranked trainer in the world, only rivaled by (maybe) N, but that's a big fat maybe. people in my story world think of strong trainers, and they think Cynthia.
but including Leon's "oh, I'm ranked #1 in the world!!!1!!" niggerfaggotry is getting on my nerves, especially since I still want to include Galar in the story.
so, how do I meander around this plot hole?? do I just make Leon a lying hack? or maybe a plotline where Leon's shit is rigged, or he's cheating, or maybe even the whole "dexit" thing making his counters less prominent due to a more shallow pool?

It's entirely chairman Rose's doing. The whole "#1 trainer" thing is a fraud title to begin with since it's a tournament controlled and hosted by Rose, but Leon's too himbo to know any better.

on the "different Continental Leagues" idea, it's so hard for me to decide whether I want my characters to battle him (cathartic for me as the writer to finally kick his whiny ass), or if I want Cynthia to flatten him (to hype up her power even more).
maybe, since it's a tournament, there could be a losers' bracket, where Leon is bumped to after Cynthia assrapes him? my characters could struggle against him in order to show how daunting of a challenge Cynthia is?

The idea of there being a singular definitive strongest trainer in the world is a little bit silly. Different trainers have different strengths and weaknesses. Alice may be able to defeat Bob, and Bob may be able to defeat Charlie, but Charlie might be able to defeat Alice. Maybe they're both considered to be "the best" because neither them have been defeated (yet). Considering that they live very far apart, it's entirely plausible that they've never even met before, much less had a real battle. And it's not like either of them has anything to gain from a battle.

Also, as a massive Cynthiabro, I don't feel that it suits her character to be the undisputed strongest trainer alive as determined by defeating literally everybody. She's not the kind of person who feels the need to go out and fight everyone just to prove herself to them. So it's entirely plausible that she refused to fight him on the grounds of not caring, and either Leon or his marketing department interpreted this as a forfeit of some kind. It's not like she would go out of her way to correct them just for the sake of her own reputation. Unlike Leon, she's not completely obsessed with rep.

Another way to do it is to say that one of them beat the other, but under circumstances that left the outcome a little bit disputed. Like they had a cold or one of their pokémon was not able to fight due to an injury, something like that.

I don't know if it was intentional, but Gamefreak strongly implied that Chairman Rose was pulling dirty moves to keep Leon in power.

There's also the fact that Macro Cosmos and it's various divisions seem to be the only company in the region and they also seem to run the pokemon league. They're a pseudo-governmental mega corp. To suggest that they aren't inherently corrupt is either contrarianism, deliberate genre blindness, or a level of optimism that would be weird even for the pokemon setting.

The Galar league is invite only (basically you only get in by paying ass-loads of money or by knowing a guy).
The PC getting invited is strange, no the whole Leon is my "the other N word" does not fly.
The PC outright lives right next door to a forest full of legendary pokemon.
We also know that Galar has a missing royal family...
Now why would the champions family live right next to them hm?

They are strong but in all honesty lag behind Sinnoh, Paldea and Hoenn of all places.

The most she does is look into the same mythological stuff Team Galactic is to try and figure what they're up to, but it doesn't accomplish much. In Platinum she goes into the distortion world with you, which counts for a lot in terms of taking a personal risk (there was no reason to assume it would be a two-way trip apart from the meta-knowlege of it being a video game) but she still doesn't DO much in there.

I'd hate to give Galar any credit, but Leon actually contributed the most, save for maybe lance helping out at Mahogany.

granted this isn't much that he has done, but it paints a very clear picture: so long as you can tell dense-ass Leon that there's trouble afoot, Leon springs into action immediately.
other champions no-doubt know about the chicanery of their respective region's evil teams, but only help out one thing; even lance, who shows up when the evolution radio is causing distress to pokemon, simply scoffs at the radio tower invasion, and says "I already did my part of the work back in Mahogany town. somebody else do it."
and Cynthia is too busy studying theology to actually push back against team galactic. granted, Cynthia was probably studying so she could stop their plan at spear pillar, but she still neglects the bombings and hostage situations.

all you need is a character or group to follow around. if you want an OC, you can do that. if you want a story about Roxanne from Hoenn, you can do that.
if you want a sad story about Youngster Joey always losing, and him having to learn that winning is secondary to his love of his Rattata, then you can do that.

unless you pull some wizard chicanery, all you need is a compelling character or group (+dynamic), and you're golden.
