No, SWSH looks like shit. The character models clash hard with the detailed environments.
Like, you can see the fuzziness on the carpet yet people's hairs are just anime-esque blobs. The characters have outlines, but nothing else does.

SV textures are horrible, they're trying to go realistic which REALLY doesn't work for Pokemon, I played Let's Go yesterday and was like fuck, why couldn't they have kept the anime style, Let's Go graphics were beautiful (minus the chibiness)

it definitely does, but it's even more exacerbated by how tied the series is to childhood nostalgia.

Like clockwork, about 7-10 years (or 3 generations) after a gen comes out, there's a huge wave of nostalgia for it on the internet, likely from people who grew up with those games when they were 8-12 years old.

You can clearly see this pattern going back to Sinnoh especially. Notice how virtually everyone hated XY until a couple of years ago now it's suddenly 'sovl'. Next up, we're due for some Alola nostalgia in the next couple of years.

Sword and Shield looked like garbage compared to Let's Go. Which only looked okay for a Switch game.
At a certain point I'm barely going to notice when things look slightly worse than "below par" without a direct side by side comparison for reference.

Pokemon's visuals on the Switch has become the new "Zelda debate", in that every new game makes people swear up and down the LAST game was better even though people bitched about THAT game nonstop when it was out.

When Let's Go came out, people say everything is too shiny and looks like toys. When SwSh came out, people started the "N64 TREES" meme. When Legends came out, people said they missed the stylized aesthetics with outlines and a more anime look. SV is out and now people are saying how soulful Arceus is with its strong art direction.

The only thing we can all agree on is that BDSP always looked like shit.

Compare the size of the area you're standing in in those two examples. You can fit that Pokémon center a hundred time, on at least 5 floors, in that SV hall.

The only open map in SwSh looks way worse than anything in SV. Everything else is either a 15m long linear 'route' or a single small room. A direct translation of the 2D games but somehow even worse.

People soured on XY really quickly because it lacked content. It was impressive the way the Pokemon were rendered in 3D and that helped it get rave reviews from the press, but it aged like milk within a year. A lot of people expected a Pokemon Z to come and add the rest of the content missing, but fans demanded Ruby and Sapphire remakes so GF made them despite never originally having plans to do so.

But the fact that you and other people talk like others identify strongly with a generation just proves my point. People's enjoyment with Pokemon has a lot to do with nostalgia and regardless of the game's quality in a vacuum, there will be people 7-10 years from when the game came out who will all say the generation was actually peak, kino, sovl etc

they def went for the PBR look rather than stylized.

Even the ripped assets show that SV and Legends is using metalness/roughness/etc now compared to the more stylized light-ramps and diffuse look of SwSh.

SV is using deferred rendering too, which explains the performance issues since deferred rendering is notoriously shitty on portable hardware due to all the memory bandwidth required.

You can just tell some art director or tech-artist forced the graphics engineer have to implement every possible feature you _shouldn't_ be doing on switch hardware because it's easier to hire people that use substance-painter than people that have to adapt into a super-stylized art-pipeline.

SV wouldn't look so bad if they didn't have to sacrifice resolution, aliasing, frame rate, and trying to physically-ground a bunch of stylized rendering decisions from the previous generations into PBR parameters like roughness/metalness.

even splatoon ran into similar issues and had to resort to a bunch of up-scaling tech to mitigate hardware issues.

Eh, GBA Pokemon was alright, but there's absolutely better out there. Didn't help on the visual side that a lot of Gen 1-2 Pokemon used identical backsprites to GSC though.
