I like fuecoco, and it is solid by modern stage 1 starter standards, but totodile is one of the best first stage starters period.
Sandile is just a great first stage, not much to say.

I've come to appreciate croconaw a lot more recently, pretty solid mid stage. Krokorok is alright. Crocalor is not good.

Alright, here's the curveball: I love skeledirge. You could easily argue that it's overcooked and there's too much going on but for me it all just works. The bird flame growing its own "mic stand" manages to overcome the major awkwardness you see in other "prop" starters like rillaboom, meowscarada, or samurott. Hard for me to say no to a hellish singing crocodile. And I always appreciate a ghost type that isn't purple but also actually feels like it should be a ghost type.
Feraligatr is good. No muss, no fuss, just a good solid fella.
Krookodile is also really good, but the twig arms take enough away from the design for me to put it slightly below the other two.
Skeledirge > Feraligatr > Krookodile
