in your headcanon, how do you differentiate dark type pokemon from ghosts? do dark types control the shadows? are they just physically strong evil pokemon or do they have supernatural powers?

this is very important to me

(p.s. also what about psychic vs fairy what's that all about, how are they different)

Ghost types generally relate to at least one theme associated with ghosts: death, incorporeal beings, possession of inanimate objects.

Dark types are generally the "dishonorable" type, often being being either underhanded fighters, vicious animals, or in some way associated associated with demise or destruction, even in cases where the pokemon isn't necessarily evil (contrary to the Japanese name for the type) like Absol.

My headcanon for moves is that the "shadow" in the names for ghost type moves like shadow ball emphasizes the incorporeal nature of the attacks, like how shadows have no substance to them, whereas the "dark" in the names of many dark type moves like dark pulse emphasizes the intent behind them, being like an evil eye kind of thing.

For me, dark types usually uss an evil power. I notice a lot of dark type moves involve using the opponent's stats, move, or item against themselves. Sort of like black magic, I guess. Then with ghost types, just usually more haunted or paranormal moves and abilities.

i think for me, evil power and supernatural power are so closely linked that it's not clear where one starts and stops.

grudge and curse are both moves with evil intent

some dark moves seem to talk about the void a lot, like in dark void or black hole eclipse. it'd be cool if they were more consistent about that theme because it connects to psychic being a space related type but more evil.

Not to say there isn't cross pollination but for most pokemon, I generalize it as:
Ghost - undead, spooky, and/or spiritual in nature
Dark - anywhere from sleezy to evil intentions
