I get you. Usually evil edgelords in other JRPGs that are your "rival" are actually evil. They kill, they murder, they destroy, etc. They are actively antagonistic and hinder your path.

What can a 10 year old child with chip on his shoulder do with a cyndaquil? Nothing really.
So their threats and anger often feels like it goes nowhere.

Kieran is S tier, I like Gladion, Cheren and Nemona a lot too.
Rivals are in a good place currently since they're actually giving them backgrounds, I don't want one note memes like Barry or the Gen 6 kids.

I find it extremely ironic that Hau and Hop get shit on and boxed into their own category, considering they're some of the most complex characters the series has produced. As for me I like a mix. Flighty/Weak and Asshole/Serious play well off of each other.

They really nailed it with Blue, he's privileged but still genuinely talented, ambitious and smart, antagonistic but not so much to be straight up malevolent like Silver, always one step ahead of you in everything, with an attitude that makes him irresistibly hateable. In a story that perpetually characterizes you as being moral, innocent, and heroic, it's fun to have a rival that can pull a bit of dumb jealous hatred out of you when nobody else is looking. No other rival quite makes you feel that way. He's the perfect catalyst for growth all the way to the very end.

I like the asshole and edgy ones because I feel drive to fight them. With the nicer ones, I just feel like a dick for curb stomping them when all they do is act friendly towards you. The serious ones are kind of neutral, I don't feel that much of a drive to fight them, but I also don't feel bad beating them.

I disagree, there's a decent amount of depth there. The bits with him trying to escape Hala's shadow is good stuff, and is sufficiently underplayed to qualify as subtext. Very few characters in this series get any kind of decent subtext. It's unfortunate this is recycled so blatantly with Hop and Leon, the loss of the subtlety only makes it less interesting. Hau's also got some fun interactions with the player, Lusamine, and Gladion. I like a good asshole rival as much as anyone but I feel like Hau gets a bit more disrespect than he deserves.

Brendan/May is a good version of Blue, their greatest battle is the one in Route 110
Wally is the rival of Hoenn, but you meet him only twice

He is considered one of the best rival only because he is from Gen 4, and because he is rematched in Platinum inside the house of the rematches. Also he is the son of Palmer.
>Cheren and Bianca
Bianca is annoying and she is the first rival to pick the weaker starter to you, while Cheren is the rival who want to become stronger and peack the natural starter of the rival.
Two rivals because it's Black and White, so it's was this thing to differentiate the game in any aspects of two kinds.
Cheren is the best rival here.

You can’t really compare him to Bianca. Bianca is shy and clumsy, Barry is careless and just lives day to day. They’re not the same archetype at all
Bianca is more like Timmy if anything. Idk if there was ever another Barry like rival in pokemon. Keksandra from clover is pretty close

I kinda hate how Trevor's story sounds quite cool on paper but not only it's absolutely not used in game but is actively hide from player by putting it all in Trevor's house... in random building in literally largest city in the game.

tl;dr - Trevor's parents are traveling ace trainers and him reading plenty of books about Pokemon and becoming a nerd was coping mechanics against loneliness. You could probably spin it into him becoming a trainer to chase after his parents. You could even add them to the game as random double battle in Victory Road, kinda like how Winstrate Family's oldest son is an NPC in Hoenn's Victory Road.

Also, Tierno was born in wrong generation. His quirk of being a dance dude obsessed with Pokemon moves would work perfectly in Alola where entire gimmick is based on dance-like moves, there's a quirky specie of dancing bird Pokemon and professor is a Gigachad researching Pokemon moves.

Unironically Shauna and Calem/Serena are most boring "rivals" for me in XY because they both are just flat repeats of friendly rival and competitive rival. At least Shauna has her quirk with being good at puzzles and being friends with Clemont and his little sister so you can make something with her helping them invent puzzle for their gym or something.
