>>55115441I have the opposite problem where OCs that are just customized players are uninteresting and don't impress me, but I either love or hate someone's character design. I think I've only found one OC I really like, mostly because it's kind of a gamble on if an artist is both good enough to not be cringe and if they can into character design at all. Between bad OCs and customized player characters, I guess I prefer the customs, but I'll always take off points for being lazy because it just runs the risk of being less unique/exactly like someone else's character because of the limitations. OCs based off of a custom player with distinctions is different though, I use dollmakers to make OCs all the time lel
>>55115516Pretty much, an OC is basically a stranger to most people who aren't "in the know" about said OC and seeing what is essentially a stranger on the arm of your husbando isn't gonna sit well with most people. That kind of stuff is to be shared amongst consenting friends who don't mind or like your stuff. I emphasize "consenting" because I've seen a lot of cases of people posting about their self-insert ship in groupchats or public Discord servers without asking if people are cool with it first... its usually unaware kids, but still. Also the faster one learns to not rely on social media attention for personal hobbies and interests, the faster they're able to enjoy themselves in peace.
>>55120336Bad take. Especially if a canon character has nothing going for them, fan creators should at least be within their right to do something with them if they really like them. Whether or not what they do is even good or bad, that's not really the point. Saying "you can look, but you can't touch" when canon content is made to be enjoyed and played with how each fan sees fit is just selfish. A wise mangaka once said, "I don't give a shit, my manga is a product and fans can do what they want because it doesn't affect my vision." But hey, opinions are buttholes, etc
