Blue in RBY is the former, Kieran is the latter. Nemona's already reached the finish line, she doesn't want a rival, but a friend. In XY only Calem/Serena is considered a rival, as they're competing with you for the Mega Ring, despite having a group of friends you also battle at around the same skill level.
