Why did they stop having random characters from previous games showing up for no explicable reason? I miss when the games did that.

I can't imagine any returning character in the gen 9 art style but not having any in gen 8 was a huge missed opportunity. They could have had DLC 2 he the world cup

the art style is becoming increasingly inconsistent (literally every switch game has a different art direction) and old characters would look horribly out of place in newer settings unless they were redrawn to suit them

see paldea characters in pokémon masters to understand how jarring this can be

What happened? How did we go from Gen 1 where one artist drew the artwork for all the Pokémon designed by multiple people to make them consistent in one style to what is even happening in Gen 9?

I think Yusuke Ohmura (?) helped with character designs for Gen 5 and 6
Then someone else during Sun/Moon, then again for Sword/Shield

I'd rather they focus on new characters. But it's always nice to see old characters in post-game stuff.

The lore and stories are so inconsistent and fractured that it's not really charming anymore. Seeing red and green in alola felt hamfisted and like they did it purely to create marketing hype for the prerelease trailer. It's not really interesting to have old characters pop up for 2 minutes just to say "wow, I'm in XYZ region now, isn't it nice here?" And proceed to have no impact or relevance to the setting or story. That said it doesn't do any harm I guess
