Worst decision Bandai ever made was taking Digimon out of the competition.
They didn't want to be seen as another Pokémon game... So... They just gave up and never released normal, vanilla catch-them-all rpgs about leveling monsters to evolve them at a certain point beating bosses after Digimon World 3.
If the Digimon World 3 formula kept being polished they'd be selling millions by now, even if the brand is seen as "edgy pokémon" since at least it'd be seen, nobody fucking knows Digimon anymore and they're not missing out on anything because the games are barren grindy trash trying to reinvent the Tamagotchi wheel

Monster Sanctuary is a great game but despite the obvious inspiration I can't really call it a substitute for Pokemon. I think the reason it managed to be good is that they realized trying to be a Pokemonkiller is a fruitless endeavour so they tightened their scope and focused on doing something different. As opposed to this game that looks like baby's first unreal engine asset scam but with creature catching tacked on.

Anyways if anyone wants an actually good Pokemon-esque game play Monster Sanctuary.

Oh yeah Monster Sanctuary is very fun, but it doesn't play like Pokémon at all. The gameplay is 3v3 with a big focus on synergies, and your creatures have a lot more than 4 moves to chose from. The overworld is also very metroidvania-esque

Yeah that's basically what I meant. Trying to beat Pokemon directly is never going to work (Temtem) but that doesn't mean you can't make your own fun monster catching game. Honestly the main problem with Palworld is that it just looks like a soulless unreal engine scam, a 3D action game with catching mechanics could totally work (arguably that's basically what ARK is).

Doesn't change the fact that no one is interested in playing a game that's exactly the same as Pokemon but with shittier designs like Temtem, Nexomon, etc. Other monster catchers can be good but they need to actually be substantially different.

It's crazy how the first gameplay shot they show you can't even see whT you're aiming at. The mount blocks the crosshair every fucking time. Let's take a look at pic related, where some of these look AI generated and the other ones are just edits of Pokemon. I want to see my MC integrated to the world, not just be a vehicle where I can see and find many creatures.
And speaking of creatures, I want to discover some as well. Some alternate evos or new monsters by reaching a milestone or an event.

That would be the best game for me. Not this ripoff where my character spins like a spinner and shots heavy weaponry against obvious R34 bait while listening to fucking Darude - Sandstorm.

I don't get it. People always say the PokeClones like TemTem, Nexomon, or Monster Crown just "don't engage them as much as Pokemon" either because of gameplay or designs. People will see romhackers make entirely new dexes and regions and go, "These designs are great, too bad it's wasted on trash Pokemon FireRed mod" or whatever.

So now we have a game that just says fuck it and copies Pokemon designs while obviously ripping off various elements from Legends (The visual elements of the UI and battle elements look directly taken from them) and incorporating some Monster Hunter gameplay in order to make it more "engaging" compared to standard Pokemon fare. And now /vp/ is going, "HURRRR LOOKS LIKE A POKEMON RIP-OFF".

Of course it fucking does, that's the whole point. What the fuck.

If it's in a pokemon fangame, then people are sad that they aren't real pokemon.
If it's in a pokemon like game (temtem nexomon) Then it normally lacks the nostalgia or polish that almost 20 years will give you.
If it's not a pokemon game but copies pokemon designs. Then it's just fucking weird. Like when you see asset flip horror games using anime models. It's just odd.
In this case Palworld has pokemon like designs so it's all happy and cute and soft. Then they add random shotguns and tanks and slave labour camps.

I do feel like magical shotgun would probably fit it better though.
Dragons dogma is something i've never seen really replicated. Though I'm looking forward to Dragons dogma 2. I have beaten the first one so many times.

I played this on game pass, it's fun enough to be worth a try. The evolutions are kind of funky and don't exactly make the monster stronger, they just change its moveset and stats to be different from the original form. But it's fun exploring around and collecting all of the monsters. Every monster has a couple of builds and is pretty unique across the whole game, even the weak early monsters, you can work with pretty much any monster in the game if you invest in them although some monsters are just outright very strong. Game isn't too hard either so you can afford to be pretty flexible although utilizing type effectiveness and combos are both important
