Not really. XY was the first generation with a generational gimmick, yet the starters themselves don't get to be part of that gimmick. Ash-Greninja is Mega Greninja in all but name. SM has Z-moves for each starter, SwSh has Gigantamax forms for each starter, and SV doesn't have special forms for anyone but two legendary Pokemon, giving everyone the same playing field.

I guarantee you Ash-Greninja wouldn't exist if Gamefreak actually pulled their heads out of their asses and made Mega Greninja, Mega Chesnaught, and Mega Delphox properly.

The Hoenn starters in ORAS got Megas. The Kanto starters have Megas. Yes the Kalos starters fucking needed it, retard. Xerneas and Yveltal also needed Megas; Groudon and Kyogre got them. Hell, Zygarde got its special complete form next game, while Xerneas and Yveltal got NOTHING.

I feel the anime was expecting the starters to have megas, but then GF cut the plug for Z, so they had to walk back on the concept.
Problem is they already hyped up stuff with Greninja, so rather than go for the trouble of making 2 more megastar, everyone went "smol cumpany, pls standasu", and dragged Ash Greninja until Ash's fiasco championship.
After that, everybody turned a blind eye and went "no, this never happened, we never planned for a part 3, and megas are actually torturing your Pokémon because of bullshit reasons, and not a normal super Evo that is born from your friendship like we said at the beginning".

Greninja was robbed, and deserved better. In fact, all G6 starters were robbed.
Gamefreak fuck that up.

I don't care about them having megas from a game standpoint but for the anime a Mega Greninja (or something like it i.e. Ash Greninja) was desperately needed because megaing is the main feature of the gen and Ash needed to be able to participate in it. Even just from a narrative standpoint he needs to have some kind of powerup to match his opponents in order for the battles to feel good to watch. Imagine if Jotaro didn't have a stand or Luffy didn't eat any devil fruit, you can't have satisfying anime battles like that. Yeah they could've just given Ash some pokemon that already has a mega but it's more narratively fulfilling if it's his Greninja (or Pikachu, but they wouldn't be able to as easily handwave "Ash-Pikachu" away in the future).

The arc was fucking dogshit, the chosen one prophecy bs was pure fanfic garbage and Greninja itself was sidelined in favor of Ash's growth exclusively (we didn't even get to know hoe it felt about the prophecy btw) when the main point of development arcs in relation to a season's "ace" is supposed to be how they grow together.

My bad. I forgot about the event mythical that hasn't been available for eight years. Still doesn't invalidate my point that they didn't want to change their brand-new starter designs. Even the GMax forms of the starters in SwSh just barely alter them, whereas the older starters get drastically different redesigns.

They couldn't, none of the gen 6 Pokemon have one, and they weren't allowed to give him non-gen 6 Pokemon for marketing reasons.
