The gen 5 dex was convergent evolution; somewhat similar mons with somewhat similar stats that fill the same niche but ultimately have different designs and different gimmicks. It made sense cause Unova was the first non-Japan region so the idea was that, in the absence of old mons from old environments, new mons came to fill similar roles while still being unique pokemon. This new shit literally just takes old mons but reskins them, changes their type and says “yep, it’s good to go.” The whole point of new mons are to give you unique designs if nothing else, the laziness of reusing designs and calling that a new Mon just cause you changed its type and ability is just unacceptable.
