But this showed that BW wasn't just a soft reboot for a younger audience that wasn't present during pokemania days. It was willing to touch mature topics like freedom and truth and pander to older fans too, it was like Masuda was trying to relay a message that the franchise could transform and become something else that didn't needed so formulaic and periodic, and that both young and old fans could enjoy Unova the way they wanted.
Gen V flopping was the point of no return for the series, not saying there weren't people that liked it, because it eventually turned into a fan favorite region, but the critic reception and sales were enough indication that western fans wouldn't let the brand grow up or let Game Freak branch out, at least not back then.
