Sceptile is a dilophosaur. Treecko/Grovyle were fossilmons in the Ruby beta.
Torterra is a nodosaurid.
Serperior is based on the evolution of snakes (lizard losing its limbs).
Chesnaught is a glyptodon.
And after gen 6 GF stopped doing this gimmick.
