How does self destruct work? Do pokemon actually explode into pieces and die? How did anime and manga portray that move?

In SV they can self destruct in the overworld, they simply evaporate so I can guess they actually fucking die.

Anime showed it as a huge release of energy that also hit the user, so everyone was knocked out. Manga just showed an explosion from a distance and then didn't show the state of the pokemon afterward.

also you have to remember that snorlax sleep and eat a LOT so they are basically giant batteries of energy that can be released and eventually need to be recharged

They changed the description to make it clear that the Pokemon itself is not exploding.

The Pokemon expands all of its energy to generate an explosion rather than exploding itself
