Not defending it, but there is a complete difference between being unable to hook up the mess that was gen 1 and 2 cartridges and make them play nice with gen 3 games without breaking them, vs modern day where they intentionally make so many hurdles for players and make you pay every step of the way. Like why do we need 2 versions anymore other than to double dipping the sales...? and then remove chunks of the roster to warrant paying money for a "DLC" that is a singular map?
