Can anyone please explain the connection between Ash and Ho-oh? The anime goes out of its way to present Ho-oh to ash 1 FULL GENERATION before its official reveal. It seems like the writers had enough for-thought to forshadow a big event happening over 200 episodes before Ho-oh is ever seen again. Again we are talking about EPISODE 1 here.
Yet ash never catches it or even has a coheirent conversation with it, despite Ho-oh presumably having super-intelligence and telepathy like Mewtwo and Lugia.
I feel like either im missing something or the writers just fucked off Ho-oh entirely and missed out on one of the biggest plot devices in anime history.

I think you're reading too deeply into it, Anon. The point it was making was the world of pokemon is still largely undiscovered and there is much more out there to be seen. Ash happens to have a rare encounter with an unidentified, mystical looking pokemon.

Ho-oh was just tacked on into the anime first episode to tease gen 2 and as usual ashschizos are ashschizos and latched on it to wank their self-insert.

because the anime's entire purpose in the start was to advertise 2, they were even worried that the delays to 2's release would cause it to stop airing before the game came out

Ho-oh being the rainbow phoenix appearing after the rain along with a rainbow in episode 1 was a symbol of Ash overcoming challenges towards his future goal of becoming a pokemon master and there being lots of other unknown powerful mons out there that he will likely meet as part of that long journey.

Ash being able to get close-up with Ho-oh while riding Lugia in the final episode of Journeys was their way of showing he is much closer to his goal of becoming a Pokemon Master (even if that goal is as ambiguous as ever).

...you sound like wikia-addicted basedjack, Jesus.
The reality was that there was no major plot relevance to that scene. In-story it was there only to establish that yeah, Pokemon world is full of yet undiscovered Pokemon and other mysterious stuff that was secondary motivation for Ash's journey. It was not specifically about rainbow Chicken.

And from writing point of view... I suspect that it's just another kind of Shudoism. Takeshi Shudo probably saw design of Ho-Oh in GF's offices, asked few questions about what it is and decided to put it in first episode. Worth noting that it was probably when "Pokemon 2" was vastly different game, Ho-Oh was the only legendary mascot and it was years before Shudo himself gave birth to Lugia, inspired by his incestuous feelings towards his mother... so we can assume that in alternate reality there would be an episode where Ash meets Ho-Oh as it was supposed to be THE Final Pokemon.

It had already been officially revealed, they threw it into episode 1 of the anime as a bit of "holy shit kids there's Pokemon out there you can't even encounter in the games... yet" hype. There's really nothing more to it than that.

As somebody who paid attention since before the US release, and I asked around about Ho-oh, my experience is that everybody either 1) did not care about mysterious ep1 bird, or, 2) thought of was literally Moltres.
When gen 2 came around, those same people did not care still. I was psyched about it from the beginning and was really the first time I dug into lore behind the pokemon designs by myself, which was a huge hassle on 1998 internet, but was rewarding.

Ho-Oh was there to represent how vast and full of mystery and wonder the pokémon world was, since Ho-Oh wasn't recognized by the pokédex and it hadn't been revealed for the games yet either.

"Gotta Catch 'em All!" is just the western tagline. 4kids would often have Ash say he wants to catch every pokémon, despite never saying such a thing in japanese. In the original japanese anime, all Ash ever says is that he wants to be a Pokémon Master, which was left vague until the very last episode of the anime
