I don't even really like the guy, but Grusha's way more than that in his dialogue. Going into external stuff he's probably one of the most fleshed out gym leaders in the series (for as little as that's worth) with the article in the academy, the NPC trainer that talks about his past outside of Montenevera. If you couldn't pick up on any of it that's really a (You) problem.

The fuck does reiteration have to do with it? What makes him marginally more interesting than most other gym leaders is his attitude in relation to his backstory, not just the backstory itself. He's a bitter fuck who hates the cold but stays in the mountain for the sake of his position and a longing for what he once had (even if he doesn't end up admitting it until his BB League Club event where he ends up shredding down a mountain in the Polar Biome for old time's sake). If he was like almost every other gym leader in the series he would just be like "oh well I had an accident and I had to stop skiing but I'm doing great now thanks for asking!!!"
