the sequels were being worked on almost immediately after putting the original games out so the idea for them to be concluding sequels would've been in place before it started printing money. obviously yes when it became obvious this could be a long-term franchise they decided to ditch that idea, and that played a role in why so much of the original SW97 game was scrapped

Ishihara once said that there was a point in time in which he personally thought Gold and Silver would be the last games, and that has been stripped of that context and parroted as fact because someone connected with the franchise humored the notion at all. But that just sounds like his reading of the room, which then as now (how about that Nintendo Switch, eh?) is not always correct. I do not know where to point for a source, don't know who compiles these things besides Lava, just that it has been making the rounds for quite a while.

Way. The devs just thought they were going to ride the trend for a few years and then be done. Getting to gen 3 was a suprise after GSC kept going strong enough to justify it, especially because Pokemania died during RS development.

But they didn’t even know about Pokemania when they started development of GS, they probably did at some point think it was going to be the “last” game, (in that they didn’t have anything else planned), but changed their minds someone mid development or eve. Just after the games released

Pokemania was that special time between 1995 and 2003 where you literally couldn't go anywhere without seeing pokemon advertisements or people sporting merch. Pokemon itself is still immensely popular now but there was a time when it was truly a cultural phenomenon. The franchise itself is fine, alive and still kicking but its not as popular now as it was back then. So when people say "pokemania" they are just talking about a specific point in the franchises history where it was at its peak.

I think thats what people are really missing out when they talk about the "good old days" of pokemon. It was the community of players, before all the competitive metagame, before widely accessible internet strategy guides and verifiable information, it was just you and your buddies figuring shit out and sharing the physical strategy guides you were lucky enough to have, talking about rumors or just trading with the guy who had the opposite version of you so you could finally get that fucking Vulpix you were missing. Even up until the DS era it still kinda felt that way.

that was why the link cable existed in the first place. it's a game meant to connect you to other people, for people who may not have the easiest time making friends.

Yeah, this was a big change as well and definitely hurt the way the games are enjoyed. To their credit, Nintendo did their best to add things like Spot Pass but being able to battle or trade without having to actually talk to anyone definitely changed things.

That's wrong as well. He said that they would be HIS last games. He was planning on quitting after GS and then was roped into dealing with TP.
