Honestly, I would have kinda liked if Lance was flying instead: like he was something other bird keepers in Kanto (so common it was a trainer class) aspired to be like Lance or held him in high regard. I guess dragons also do that and Johto would make his use of them appropriate, but it's a nice idea.
