It wasn't as unprecedented as people made it out to be. Seismitoad had been a popular anti-meta pick in OU prior to Dexit, and a smaller pool of Pokemon meant it could thrive.
Having Water Absorb in the same gen that introduced Dracovish didn't hurt either.

He became OU again at the end of Gen 8 due to Rain teams. I remember being at the forefront of pioneering Seismitoad tech. Running him as a special attacker to basically make a surprisingly competent version of Swampert + Kingdra was peak fun.
