Either way my assumption would be that they don't want to establish too many details about a hypothetical future in universe. A natural environment reveals less about the unique traits of the setting and a lush forest/jungle would feel more like past than future. We tend to think of the future aesthetic as sterile and minimalistic with bright colorful lights, and a desert or wasteland with emphasis on stars tends to fit into that atmosphere.
Also not all of them feature wastelands.
