Sup /vp/, how's the new year treating you so far?
I spent the last weeks of 2023 browsing this board and noticed opinions are very divided on which generation is the best so I've decided to replay Gens I through V and will be sharing my thoughts on which is the best/most enjoyable (I'll be playing on an emulator but my computer is too underpowered for Citra so I won't be playing the 3DS/Switch games)
Here's the full list of games I'll be replaying this year
>Pokémon Yellow (completed)
>Pokémon Crystal
>Pokémon Emerald
>Pokémon LeafGreen
>Pokémon Platinum
>Pokémon HeartGold
>Pokémon White
>Pokémon White 2
I started my run of Yellow on Monday, January 1st and finished it today, in the wee hours of Sunday 7th.

The first thing I noticed about Yellow is that it looks and plays like a dinosaur, which is to be expected from a game as old as I am (born in '98).
But it's so fucking sloooooooow, although you get used to it after a while.
Pic related, my team. I've decided to only use Pokémon introduced in that generation to complete the game (so only Gen II Pokémon in Crystal, etc.)

The early game sucks as, there's no way yo get around this truth.
Pikachu is quite possibly the worst starter in the series, period.
It's only utility comes in the fight against Misty, otherwise I ditched him as soon as I evolved my Eevee into a Jolteon

As y'all probably know, the game is horribly unbalanced, with only a scant number of the 150 available mons being remotely usable.
Move pools are also remarkably barren compared to following generations, forcing you to rely on TMs to get good movesets

Generally I didn't have to do any grinding except at the very end, right before the Elite Four, my team was in their late 30s and I had to grind to level 45 for everyone.
By far the worst thing about the game however is the PC and limited inve tory space. The game makes you change boxes MANUALLY or else you can't catch new Pokémon, naturally it never tells you when your box is full so I found myself trying to catch a rare mon when a message indicates my box is full. Fuck that shit.
I didn't appreciate having to constantly empty my bag on my PC to make space for new items, and you have to sell or toss many anyways.

The parts I liked about the game is that it opens up around the midgame and you can choose in which order you tackle the Gym Leaders (mostly).
I also found it funny that you encounter Jessie and James from the anime a couple of times, although after your final battle in the Silph Co. building they just disappear without closure.

The last third of the game, starting with the last 4 Gym Leaders (Koga, Sabrina, Blaine and Giovanni) as well as the Elite Four is certified kino and I suspect the main reason why the Gen I games are as fondly remembered as they are (other than nostalgia).
High level play with your team fully evolved is where the game truly shines

Blue is a great rival, I like that he actually changes his team every time you meet him so you don't get complacent.
He even explicitly says he was on the lookout for the best mons and frequently swapped out his team, neatly debunking the Lavender Town creepy pasta that claims he was at the Pokémon Tower mourning the Raticate "you" killed (he was looking for a Marowak)

I did the "post-game" and captured all 4 legendaries.
Otherwise there's really nothing else to do except challenge the Elite Four again.
This is without a doubt the most content barren mainline Pokémon game between Gens I-V

Overall rating: 5/10
Although Gen I contains an iconic region, characters and mons and a strong and enjoyable endgame it ultimately suffers from being buggy, slow, very graphically dated, unbalanced and possessing a terrible box and inventory management system that makes collecting items and Pokémon a hassle.
This is definitely NOT the best gen and Genwunners claiming it's the best are high on nostalgia.
I'm already almost finished with Crystal, I'll be posting some time next week with my results.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The vast majority of people playing gen 1-5 today are playing on emulators with fast forward, so slowness is rarely ever thought of as a problem today.

I actually did play on an emulator but purposefully didn't use the fastforward option because it wanted the experience to be as close to the originals as possible.
Blue, Red and Yellow are in fact, slow af, especially since you don't get Running Shoes and I didn't do the side quest to obtain a Bike

I play on the 3DS VC. I don't want to speed through. Gen 1's best point by far is the comfy novel adventure and general charm. Why would I want to speed through that? if I wanted efficiency and gameplay improvements, I'd just play FR/LG, but when I want the general experience and that certain je ne sais quoi, I will play RBY.

So you exploited something you found out by looking up or you just happened to decide to try to repeatedly use a potion on a pokemon with full health for no particular reason?

The games have lots of bugs but most players aren't going to run into them during the single player experience unless they want to. Complaining that they were "buggy" games when these are the biggest things that happened to you (one being a purposeful exploit) seems like an over exaggeration. If you had said something like the rage glitch then that's legit frustrating.

I think OP is annoyed by general busted mechanics (wrap, sleep, ghost not being SE vs psychic), but is just parroting what he's heard before. The games *are* easy to break, but honestly that's part of the enjoyment, just like the original release of Mario 64. But you do absolutely need to go out of your way to break them. The only thing I can think of that could realistically fuck you in Gen 1 is the cut tree softlock.

Did the same thing more or less last year after restoring the batteries in my original carts. the complaints are valid, but imo growing pains every jrpg suffered from the era. Every series had a broken stat/item/inventory management etc. Because of that I like the pacing it has, like you said the game really opens up and kinda makes you slow down to optimize your loadout.

This sounds about right, Gen 1's appeal at this stage is the aesthetic and opening of the map and sudden jump in power level that brings mid-game. Beyond emulator speed-ups I think long time players are also so used to playing around the limits of the TM pool or inventory management that you can sort of forget they're a problem at all, I know I have. I would quibble about how much of the roster is usable but have to grant that Yellow actually has something resembling proper bosses so that's a hiccup the first three versions did not have.

Everybody loved it. My school in 1999 even had to ban bringing Pokémon related things to school because it was getting out of hand. Gen 2 plays way more like the later games than Gen 1. It's also gorgeous with a great soundtrack, hard not to enjoy on some level.

Some effects not triggering after knocking out a foe is a fun mechanic whether it was intended or not, if that's the worst thing you encounter in a playthrough then the legendary bugginess of the game can't be that bad.
