it's obvious from some of the game storylines that the devs want to tell deeper stories but are limited by what they're allowed to get away with. if they branched out, they could do so much with the series

The games need better writing for sure, but they can do so without going full Elfen Lied. The amount of edge in the canon games is good enough (Kalos War, Sada/Turo death, Cyrus’/Lysander’s/Ghetsis’ psychosis, etc). They just need to polish the overall plots and world building.

Thing is, if you do want to write a more mature pokemon story then the biggest thing you must get right is the optimism. The pokemon world itself is optimistic, where good will triumph in the end. You can put the characters through hell and back but as long as you keep the edge of optimism and don't get too doom and gloom you'll be fine.

the anime was fucking rad back in the day, and it mostly matched the first two movies in feel. go back and look at the list of contriversies. aside from the guns episodes it had gyaradoses and tentacruels destroying a seaside town, there was a tentacruel that used meowth like a voice puppet in a manner that seems like an intentional imitation of the dissection scene in the independence day movie.

What would be cool to see is more exploration on the society and worldbuilding, grittier not in "grimdark" but rather just add some edge to the setting. explicitly depict pokemon being eaten as food, have some scummy towns full of trash, maybe some more realistic evil teams that are more like actual criminals. I know we've had some of this in bites but what I mean is ramp it up. Even just having other people have interests that aren't related to pokemon be commonplace would be a start
