Honestly, remaking Johto in an HD-2D style could be a perfect testing ground. Kanto re-remakes were taken up by Let's Go, so Johto would be next for experimental re-remakes.

Annual releases are absolutely not necessary. Games back then were good because they took their time to program them instead of rushing them. Why do you think they were able to tease some gen 4 mons like Munchlax Lucario etc so long in advance. This barely ever happens nowadays because the games and dexes are rushed, we only know about them a few months in advance at best. Pokemon was already one of the most successful franchises of all time during gens 3/4, so that’s not an excuse either, they absolutely do not need to go for annual releases

Colosseum alone is proof you can have a good 3D game. It's not the end result that is indicating failure, but the method. If Ninty properly put their foot up GF's ass and made them take their time and delay the release, i'm confident we would have had a good modern 3D game by now.

Honestly, to gamefreaks credit, an open world pokemon game would be pretty hard. But that’s made even more so on the switches lacking hardware. It’s hard to play SV correctly without running into issues every now and then. As someone mentioned before a linear game with less pokemon might work, but it would have to be on a better console. Maybe the Switch 2 will be better. I mean the switch released when ps4 and Xbox one were still around and couldn’t even beat them.

There are plenty of working open world games on the switch. This shit has nothing to do with the power of the console, SVs issues can be entirely blamed on GFs incompetence and TPCs draconian scheduling. A stronger console in the hands of a shitty dev doesn't mean a game is going to be better. A bad game is still going to be a bad game with infinite computing power. PLA wound up being pretty good and that was due almost entirely to GF not being the only dev working on it.

Gen 4/5 were absolutely beautiful. 3D overworld, especially 3D OPEN world just pulls the curtain back to much. You see the wizard and no longer see Oz. 2D affords greater suspension of disbelief, 3D Open World doesnt.
I also feel the bar is astronomically higher for anything 3D open world because of stuff like BotW or Elden Ring, so it makes Pokemon look even lazier and shittier.

3D games have struggled, but running back to the old games won’t solve any of that. Just look at BDSP.

3D isn't the problem. The only terrible 3D games are SV by virtue of just not working properly and having a shit artstyle. If anything the problem was falling for the open world meme rather than sticking to the formula that worked with the previous 8 gens.
