Why are pokemon consoles always so damn expensive? Why the artificial scarcity? It's one of the most popular franchises ever, why don't they sell more consoles when they're new?

I bought one of picrel cib years back for a few hundred bucks, and now they're $600+. What the fuck happened?

I don't think the demand for single franchise-oriented console designs is really that big. They can become classic collector's items, of course, but upon release there's a reason they don't produce a ton of them. If you look at something similar, like console colors, the less popular colors (usually pinks) are scarcer, and this can eventually lead to those particular colorations being exceptionally valuable as a collector's item in the long term. But in the immediate term - what Nintendo is actually concerned about - producing too much of a surplus of an unpopular variety can be costly. Imagine if half of all of the Nintendo Switches initially produced were an ugly, hot pink with a picture of Miyamoto's face on one side. That could've turned off a lot of consumers.

Smash 64 is around 70 CAD, because people want to keep it. pokemon fans keep the games. they have functionality with other games they also keep.
