Prior to Gen VII, there weren't recolored Pokemon save for shinies and those were always optional. Even with the recolors/variations, there was still 700+ unique creatures to use. Mana's enemies are just a part of the game, not the main focus.

I don't want any 3D slop at all, go back to 2D animated sprites.
The closest I'd take to 3D is a Pokemon game that's animated in the style of FighterZ.

5th gen looked great for an NDS game.

Quite the opposite. Those are just the founders. Game Freak's always recruiting because they have a high turnover rate and they're informally a finishing school for game development grads.
