I finished my playthrough of Crystal yesterday after finally beating Red.

This is my team at their final levels, the amount of grinding you have to do (to beat Red) is insane.
One of the worst things about GSC is the low level curve, where you're fighting trainers with Pokémon still in their 30s all the way to the Elite Four. But I digress.

Let me be real for a second here: the Johto starters, at last in Gen II, suck.
Not only are the all monotype, they also have pretty sucky learnsets and due to the aforementioned low leveling curve, my Quilava only evolved into Typhlosion just before the 8th gym.

Friendship evolutions and the day/night cycle are introduced in this Gen, and it's kind of a pain in the ass to make your mon evolve by friendship.
Eevee in particular was particularly hard since it's pre-evolution learnset is underpowered, it didn't evolve into Espeon until JUST before the Elite Four, when I was grinding in Victory Road.

That said doe, the payoff was worth the effort.
Crobat and Espeon are excellent mons.
Fast and hard-hitting, not to mention having access to good movies like Psychic, Bite, Morning Sun and Gigadrain.
GF turned Zubat from an annoying pest into a mon worth catching in this gen.

The game sounds, looks and plays better than RBY too.
There's an obvious graphical upgrade, i especially liked the little animations mons do when they come out of their pokeballs.
Compare your battle sprite from GSC to the one in RBY, the improvment is palpable. The game also runs faster than RBY, which I greatly appreciated.

The introduction of berries and held items is also groundbreaking, adding more strategic depth to the combat.
I enjoyed playing a stall set with Skarmory, making it hold the Leftovers I got from Snorlax, Toxic'ing the opponent mon then using Protect and Fly to avoid damage/heal passively then finishing them off with Steel Wing.
He was a pain in the ass to catch doe, fuck that 5% encounter rate

I like that the game opens up after Ecruteak so you could choose to tackle the Rocket storyline at the Lake of Rage or go after Chuck and Jasmine first.
Seeing Lance return and kill a guy in cold blood with Hyper Beam was kek-worthy.
Two features I didn't doe were headbutting trees and Kurt's hand-made balls.
I ended up never using them because 99% of the time you get a common Hoothoot and you have to wait a whole day for a ball that is situational at best, completely worthless at worst due to poor coding.
I appreciated the presente of the Move Deleter even doe I never used him either.

I'd argue Silver is a better and more enjoyable rival than Blue since he has a more developed backstory ( being Giovanni's son but disliking Team Rocket for being bungling morons ) AND butter character development, from being a social Darwinist who despises weakness and treats his Pokémon like shit to realizing he needs to actually care about his mons if he want to win.
His Golbat evolving into a Crobat is probably the most subtle example of character development in the series.

Remember I complained about the lack of postgame content in Yellow?
Here I got what I wanted and then some, the inclusion of the entire region of Kanto (sans a few areas like Cerulean Cave) is certified kino. Loved challenging the old gym leaders, even doe only Blue is a challenge by that point in the game.
It's a shame that only these games and their remakes let you explore other regions.

The fight with Red atop of Mt. Silver is nothing short of epic, truly the final boss of the game.
I had to grind my team to level 60 and pump them full of steroids (Carbos, Protein, etc.) to even stand a chance. Kino.
Glad that they did continue the tradition of letting you battle trainers from previous gens in some of the games, it's great fan service.

I caught Suicune but not the other legendary beasts.
Roaming legendary is a cancerous feature that they unfortunately keeped in the following gens. Tracking them down, whittling them down to low HP while making sure they don't die, inflicting status conditions and then praying that your ball finally clicks is a royal pain in the ass, GF obviously doesn't respect your time if it thinks you have nothing better to do than that.

By the time you beat all Kanto gym leaders and gain access to Mt. Silver your team is going to be in their low 50s, woefully underleveled for Red's team which are at minimum 20 levels above yours. Even grinding to level 60 and pumping my team full of drugs he proved challenging

The last thing I did was catching Lugia with the Masterball, too bad Ho-Oh won't appear until you catch all 3 legendary beasts but fuck that noise.
I didn't do the Battle Tower since there is no Tower Master to fight, the following gens would greatly expand on the idea.
Overall, I'd give GSC a 7.
It's a massive improvment over Gen I, adding a lot of great features and a lot more content that was missing in RBY.
I can't call it the best Gen doe due to some glaring issue I mentioned before and the fact that some of the best mons introduced this gen are either hard to find in a normal playthrough or are restricted to the postgame (seriously, who thought locking the Misdreavus, Blissey and the Houndour and Larvitar lines behind the Elite Four was a good idea?!)
I'll be taking a break from Pokémon de, I started Crystal the same Sunday I finished Yellow and ended it today, I'll be starting next week on Emerald.
