I like ribbons because they can represent a certain achievement, marks only show that you had good RNG when catching a Pokemon. Well, except for the ones that you can actually earn I guess.

Ribbons you earn on your pokemon though, it works on any pokemon even your starters or favorites
Marks are RNG when you catch them. If they don't have that mark they never will

I think it's a neat bit of extra flavour, but it kinda works better for mons with ribbons from older games to show how far they've come.
Though that's going to be gone whenever Bank closes sadly.
