They could have done more in swsh, but all of the things we got to know about the gym leaders are from their cards.
Melony's feud with Gordie is never adressed, Nessa and Girl-with-a-big-coat's friendship is briefly mentioned, and Opal just disappears.
I didn't play the dlc though.
So maybe there's something like the BB club's interactions that I missed and that did make them more memorable than "I like fighting and give my all".
