The common denominator between the DQ and Pokémon designs are a concept and maybe a similar color scheme because of said concept, yet both series tackle said concepts somewhat differently. It is not to the same level as Palworld, for example, where some of the designs straight up copy design elements from existing Pokémon such as Primarina's hair, or that one witch pal which has Raboot's Hoodia slapped on, and you can tell they did this because it has those spikes on it that have no real reason to exist unless they heavily referenced that pokemon's specific design element
And for the record, I am not trying to imply that /every/ pal design is like this. The sheep for example is fucking stupid. Like yes, it's highly likely they included it based off of the "omg so cute" positive reactions Wooloo got, but the design is obviously not just a copy of wooloo's like most other pals are. I'd say it's more akin to the distinction between DQ and Pokémon, where it's executing a base concept in a different way.
