For Pokemon fans, this was a big deal that contributed to the death of Pokemania, and Gamefreak obviously realized their mistake, since for HGSS you got access to the new Gen 4 evos, which makes playing the game actually feel like a new experience compared to GSC. Meanwhile FRLG is just Gen 1 with slightly less dogshit movepools.
