I got through the game just fine but I'm not going to pretend I liked most of the Pokemon, say what you will about gen 2 and 4 having limited dexes, at least the Pokemon available in those games are appealing and can be made viable with the right sets, BW 1 don't even give you access to the fucking fishing rod until post game, the game desperately wants you to use the elemental monkeys and gives one of them to you, in previous gens you had to sort yourself out, not be given a gift Pokemon meant to help you a gym exclusively.
I'm nearly 30 by now and I pretty much grew with the series since I was kid, I don't get what the fuck that has to deal with this, when I first saw the gen 5 starters off of a magazine going over the details for gen 5 I thought they were fake because they looked so bland and shitty compared to the starters of previous generations, I didn't follow any fucking narrative, I wasn't even active on /vp/ back when BW came out and I didn't even have much access to the internet due to living in a rural area, I didn't like the designs from the majority of gen 5 Pokemon and I still don't, there's no "narrative" involved, just a guy's honest thoughts on the matter.
