The gen 1 watercolor style is to force perspective for concept art in ways impossible for accurate lighting, meaning it has to be painted on in a fashion jarring to those who have not grafted rose-tinted goggles to their face or an immense effort to MAKE a fake-lighting engine must be underwent.

And the saturation is thoroughly shit for prolonged screentime.

the faded water color look is neat, but doesn't really work. plus it seems way lighter than the actual old pokemon art from what i remember, i remember them having much brighter and colorful look. the models being based on old pokemon art actually looks really fucking good, and i'd loe for the character models in new games to look like that.

while the style tickles my 10 year old, the gameplay is just bad. imagine a poke game where the pokemon just keep to the sides in the grass and stay off the road. and undoubtedly, the battles will be summon pokemon > turn base battle > repeat. sorry, the fan projects of this series are just as bad as gamefreaks lazy ass to innovate. style isn't pokemons problem currently, it's everything else.

Earlier Japanese official books were found (both pre-and post- international release) that clearly show Nintendo got the colors wrong when photocopying the designs. Some people have problems with that.

It turned out that the Sugimori art used in things like the early US guidebooks and instruction manuals were REALLY shitty copies of the artwork that lost a lot of color information. So the colors all looked more faded, certain colors turned into completely different colors, and the white highlights were turned way up. The issue is that American fans are nostalgic for the way they remember the art, so a few of them threw a fit after finding out the Japanese colors were a lot bolder.
