It competes not because of its core gameplay, but because it sells that idea that the anime and worldbuilding always sold us in a way that Pokemon's RPGs have mostly always shied away from. I don't want full on guns, but I want a game like this where the wild Pokemon aren't just a threat to mine, but also to me and my house. Your little farm is starting to look nice? Here comes a stampede of Bouffalant, hope you took preparatory measures to fence it off. Out in the wilds, and whoops we stumbled across a Scyther swarm. We got lucky and they didn't notice, but if they did we might not have gotten away. Wow my base is looking pretty solid now - is that a hungry Aggron crashing through about to start eating the metal walls. Pikachu's not feeling well today, let's get him something nice to cheer him up. If I encounter a horde of angry Spearow, I don't want them to be a quarter of my level doing 1HP of damage at a time, I want to be thinking "oh god run," at least for a while until I'm strong enough to deal with them.
I don't even need the whole dex for that. I just want to be able to come across stories like that I can actually participate in rather than clicking through text boxes.
