Honestly all of Ash's anime-only rivals have pretty piss designs.
They sometimes have some pretty good one-off filler designs for the Pokemon of the Day episodes, but they consistently fuck up the main OC characters somehow.

In the anime there are more gyms in each region than just the eight we see in the games, at least one for every type. Ash follows the games' path, but rivals are free to tackle those unseen gyms. Also, Gary traveled around Kanto in a car while Ash was on foot. Small wonder he was able to collect ten badges in the same time Ash collected eight.
