Magmortar loses the mouth and tail from the prevos, has an overall less appealing body shape, trips on the line between comical / unsettling that Magmar walks, and (for no reason at all) is the second cross evo in the Gen to use arm canons.
I think it needed more work, but I get why newer / younger fans might enjoy the design. If the point was to make the evolution seem unnatural, it seems like there were other ways to achieve that (magmarizer seems like a mechanical device…why not lean into that with the evo’s aesthetics?). The theming of Gen 4 cross evos was weak, in general, and that’s a negative from my point of view. I’m WAY more willing to forgive something like Annihilape for design flaws because the theming is solid.
