Older than (you) I'd reckon, I started with Blue version on an old brick game boy right when they hit the USA. I lived through pokemania, something (you) never did. Unlike you, I have crushed my nostalgia into a powder and blown it away to the winds. I see gen 1 for what it is, a buggy shitshow that is surpassed by games even one generation its junior. You couldn't pay me to play that dogshit when FRLG and LGPE exist as superior alternatives.

If we take Gen 1 as reference, neither version would be fully accurate.

They were more untamed and dangerous but the cuteness was always supposed to be part of it to some degree.

Pokemon was ALWAYS going to be a sanitized kid-friendly world as far as GameFreak was concerned, it's just that the times were different and Pokemon exploded right in at the turn of the new millennium, which was a massively turbulent change in global culture.

Gen 1's full of really shitty designs like Voltorb, Grimer, Muk, Geodude, Graveller, Ratatta, Raticate, Pidgey, Fearow, Electabuzz, magmar, jinx, farfetch'd, and the list goes on, and includes all the starters not named Charizard.

Not the guy you were responding to but the gen 1 Pokemon got subtle redesigns relatively early on in the series (FRLG) to match up with the direction of the series, pretty much all money post 2003 at this point has been made with those subtle redesigns/stylistic changes.

From the beginning, Pokemon designs have appealed to both the cool and cute crowds for maximum profit. Yes, there are edgier elements in the series, but Pokemon like Chansey, Eevee, Meowth, and Jigglypuff were clearly designed for the "cute animal" demographic. The fact that Pokemon has something for everyone is what made it successful from the beginning.
