Johto is balanced around the fact that Kanto is part of it, the real end of the game is Red, not the league. The concept of post game area wasn’t properly introduced until DP, before then you beat the main story and that was it

HGSS only has 3 Johto Pokemon locked to postgame. BW2 has 26 Unova Pokemon locked to postgame, plus 3 more that can only be traded over from BW1.

Relative to the rest of the game, it's fairly well paced, although with non-linearity you do run into problems like that (I'll stand by my argument that Mahogany should be blocked off before you heal Amphy). The actual pace-breaker is the nearly back-to-back Rocket encounters making how mandatory all of it is even more shit. XY's pacing problems are more about how uneven it is, most of the first half is spend getting Megas which is reasonable build-up for something that was big at the time, then for a while the pacing speeds up way too fast for zero pay-off because the pay-off is Lumiose again which should be a fun little cooldown but is instead just boring and miserable (the comparison to something like Zeal in Chrono Trigger is staggering, for example). It doesn't help that immediately after that is a Sinnoh route with a pointless cut-scene attempting to get you to like your "friends" before the game gets reasonably paced again. Still arguably better than Gen 1's "boring if you play it short of you skip it" section after the Pokeflute but the fact that it's optional does earn it some points compared to either of the previous examples. In comparison, RSE and both Gen 5 titles are fairly evenly paced with the right emphasis where needed. I try not to think about DP because otherwise I'd go into a fucking coma, so if somebody else would like to talk about it be my guest.

I'd argue if you argument is held up by ignoring parts of the game, avoiding exploring, and likely RNGing perfect IV pokemon just to show you can beat it as fast as you can then you clearly don't understand what you're talking about

Why don't you count those fights since a normal person would explore and fight the trainers on the way to each gym..in fact here's what a normal person would likely do

> Enter Ecruteak
> Go to Pokemon Center & Find Bill
> Optional Decision to retread for a free Eevee or just continue on to the burnt tower
> Fight Rival while also battling the Burnt Tower trainers and unleashing the beasts
> Go to the Gym to beat Gym Trainers & Morty
> Either decide to continue or explore the city more for some time
> Get Surf TM
> Go to Route 42 & either choose to explore the cave or surf (likely you'll wanna explore the cave more)
> Battle all the trainers through Mt. Mortar and reach Mahogany
> Realize you can't battle the gym so you go and explore Routes 38-39
> Battling most trainers & Collecting items through these routes
> Reach Olivine City where Silver tells you the leaders in the lighthouse
> Go through Light House and learn Amphy needs medicine and that you need to go to Cianwood
> Explore Routes 40 & 41 (we can assume due to surfing being more tedious they try to just b line it)
> Reach the city, and notice Suicune and have Eusine fight
> Go to Chucks Gym to fight his trainers and him (win)
> Get Fly & Medicine
> Fly to Olivine and give Amphy the medicine
> Battle Jasmine
> Fly to Mahogany
> Enter Lake of Rage in which you fight 1-2 trainers
> Fight Gyrados
> Team Rocket Hideout which includes multiple rocket grunts and a fight with the admins
> Fight/Catch Electrodes
> Fight Pryce

It was super tedious to write it out but its important to not ignore all the extra elements you have to go through in order to actually get to the places you actively mentioned

I mean, it's right there. Exploring a town every time you go there is normal for any video game. If you notice a gym, one of the main parts of the game's progression is there, you visit it. You're rarely punished for it, at most you get a "come back later" type thing for a few of them, and given you just completed the one for Ecruteak it's natural for the player to want to do it. Yeah, you've got exceptions for the easily distracted and forgetful, and the occasional weird challenge runs, but these sort of things are the exception rather than the rule. It's like people who only use their starter when the tagline of the fucking franchise in basically every language boils down to "go catch Pokemon", you can do it but that's not the intended experience.
