Halfway through Hoenn you'll already start resenting some of its more common encounters like Zigzagoon, Wingull and Poochyena, Johto only really has this problem with Hoot-Hoot if you play at night, cause otherwise it uses Kanto shitmons as encounter filler instead.
Not only that but Johto allows some of the more obscure Kantomons to shine too with better distribution, Pokemon like Slowpoke, Drowzee, Gastly, Magmar, Magnemite, Lickitung and Jynx which barely see any play in your standard Kanto playthrough are allowed to be more common, so in a way it still feels fresh even when using old Pokemon (you can't even find wild Lickitung or Jynx in RBY, you're forced to get them from trades)
