Dot's initial attitude getting personafied in Tinkatink with it's initial crybaby predisposition is a neat move that allows the former to get more pushing for the sake of her Pokemon and herself later down the line, alongside Tinkatink's fondness of showing off her handcrafting which is something I would've associated with Orla and her professionalism to be the first candidate for the Tinkatink line but it plays off well with Dot's personality switches in regards to the situation. The battle with metal snake is also neat display of Dot being able to back up her role of Gurumin.
>>55381642 came true too, it was Dot's battle from the beginning to the end.

Looks like next week is going to be Weedpussy paradise on a lower note.

Yeah because the game only shows it in its signature attack and it's only mentioned in the dex entry of one of the two versions. Hence why I think they could really show it off as what it actually is in the anime.

I don't know. Too much of it hinges on how they approach its ability in an anime format. But I can see it ending up like Ash's Infernape, cowardly until it enters a tard rage trance, except this time even stronger since Roy is a better trainer than Ash.

I like the idea but I'm deathly afraid of it joining the main crew right now because it's FULLY aquatic until it evolves, which severely limits situations where it can be brought out to fight or even just hang out with the rest of the team. I feel like this'd either make them

I dunno, I'm just not feeling it despite liking the mon a lot. There's a reason the only full fishmon on a main cast member's team was Misty's Goldeen way back in OS (and I guess also Cilan's Stunfisk, but it was established that it could breathe air fine).

New moves are copouts when it comes to qualifying as "not filler". I hated this about the last anime too. Same with giving side characters new pokemon. I don't care if Nando captured a Bidoof or whatever.

Coming at this with the mindset of "this move is being used to justify this episode!" rather than "the episode is giving context to the learning of this move!" is asinine. Why did Fuecoco learn Disarming Voice? Because it manifested from it's want to calm down a family of other musical crocs. Why did Hatenna learn Heal Pulse? Because it saw Molly's Chansey use it earlier and it was put into a situations where it needed to help some hurt Pokemon.
Also Dot is solidly more than a side character, even if she isn't on the same level as Roy and Liko. Her Pokemon involved with conflicts often and she's consistently relevant to progressing the main group's progress.

Genuinely, what is your favorite episode of the show?

For me, no contest, The Wayward Wobbuffet. Hilarity incarnate, great action scenes, and it goes on to promote the blue guy from running gag to fourth member of the team. I was gonna say Air Time or Ignorance is Blissey, but this one hit me in a special certain way.

A filler episode is something I could skip and not miss anything important.
If I were to skip the episode Fuecoco learned disarming voice, what would I be missing out on? I'd see it use disarming voice later and probably wouldn't even think anything of it. And if I did, I'd know he probably learned it in some filler episode at the very end. Nothing is lost, and it's not critical to the plot in any way.

Sorry that I'm not okay with potential random bullshit being pulled out mid-battle I guess. If the episode gives context to the learning of a key part of a Pokemon's moveset it can't be filler by definition.
The mindset you're taking with just randomly seeing a new move used in battle can be applied to literally anything in any story. This is like watching the first stretch of Journeys, skipping to the very last stretch right after, and going "Why is Ash battling at the Masters 8? I guess he just won a lot then!" As if the context behind actions and happenings in a story isn't the entire point of trying to tell a story.

How about no. If the episodes were an hour long we'd probably be talking about a seasonal anime, which Pokemon will never be. If it was the structure would be so different that we would not only NOT be having this conversation, but the context behind what even started it would probably be entirely changed as well.

For the most part, yes, they were.
Actually, now that I think about it, it's objectively a better experience to skip everything and only watch the Masters 8. Because by doing so, you aren't aware of just how out of place Ash and his team is. You go in without knowing that Riolu literally hatched not too long ago, or that Dracovish was revived not too long ago, or that Dragonite just recently joined Ash's team already fully evolved, or that Ash struggled to beat pissants like Gladion and Guzma just last season.

You go in unaware of all these reasons that Ash doesn't belong, and instead you get to see what you would probably think is a veteran team that Ash trained himself for years, possibly decades. You go in unaware that Ash hasn't actually improved as a trainer in the last 17 years, and get to live in the delusion that the bullshit he's coming up with is stuff he actually spent time planning out and drilling into his pokemon.

Objectively speaking, at least in regards to the Ashime, the filler only worsens the payout.

This is such as stupid, asinine complaint that requires you to actively question how Ash and Pikachu EVER ended up struggling against trainers and gym leaders at the start of literally any season past OS and why the Pokemon Ash caught during the seasons were oftentimes treated as equal to (if not outright stronger) than it despite the sheer gulf in both accomplishments and training time.

The answer is you don't, lest you realize that the progression of the overall anime was so nonsensical for the sake of preserving the status quo that the scaling in any one season is of absolutely no consequence in the grand scheme of things. What matters is that Ash's Lucario grew from it's rivalry with Bea and earned it's Mega Stone by going through a trial on an island, not that it hatched a few weeks ago in-canon.

This is exactly why you DON'T watch that shit. You skip it all and go straight to the Masters 8, so you can pretend that Ash actually deserves to be there. By watching all that came before, you become aware that Ash does not deserve to tango with the champions, let alone beat them.

What matters is that Ash's Lucario only recently hatched, and by not knowing this fact you get to believe that Ash trained Lucario hard over the course of years to make it worthy of competing against champions. You get to pretend that Ash raised Dragonite from just a Dratini, or that he's been travelling with it for several generations now and it has accrued battle experience the entire time with him. Sirfetch'd is a pokemon he caught during GS and occasionally used here and there. You get to pretend Ash fought the elite 4 and champions in the past, setting a precedent for him being almost at their power level.

You get to pretend that "lock-on 100,000,000 Volts" isn't something he just came up with on the fly, and that he spent time teaching his Pikachu so he could catch the champions off guard.
You get to pretend that Cinderace didn't have Libero, and that Leon didn't throw the match.

By watching what came before the Masters 8, you objectively ruin it. This is one of the times the destination is better off without the Journey.

I think that to watch the anime at all you have to accept some things regarding progression are going to be flubbed and you should just put stock in the story moments that coincide with them, whereas you think the progression being flubbed alone already makes it invalid for justifying the destination at the end of the journey. Every other destination was perfectly fitting. Ash coasted in OS by relying on powerful pokemon he didn't train or bond with, and it ended up coming back to bite him when Charizard refused to carry him. Ash became a better person in GS, but didn't improve as a trainer much and ended up losing again.
That he kept abandoning his pokemon every generation made it more believable, since he wasn't giving them the chance to gradually improve over time. Understandable, since the anime has to shill new pokemon.
This trend that continued in every generation(ignoring non-leagues like the Orange Isles, BF, and Alola) up until JN where he was suddenly put on the same level as champions. It ruined it the flow.

Ash should have stuck with Goh and joined Project Mew, and his grand retirement could be catching the same pokemon that kids back in the RB days were obsessed over. Anything but the Masters 8.

Ash never got worse, he just never got better. Nobody can point to many instances where Ash himself improved. I distinctly remember people being shocked and awed that Ash knew how to wrap a bandage over something in MPM, which I think demonstrates just how low the standards are when it comes to him.

A Pikachu who defeated a Regice should not have been knocked out some shitter Surskit using a strategy he'd already encountered before a few seasons later. The Snivy example is just one instance of bullshit and even then there's no explanation for it. The encounter with Zekrom sapped it's electrical power, it didn't remove every ounce of combat experience from it's body. It should've taken far more of a beating from Snivy than it did before going out.

I'll compare Pikachu's contributions in the final gym battles of each generation.
Kanto, I'll ignore TR's gimmick battle and use Blaine instead. OS is a mess, as always. Pikachu went from one-shotting Rhydon by aiming for the horn, to failing to even breach Magmar's passive heat brimming off his body. A good and bad showing that can't be measured, typical OS nonsense.
Johto, Kingdra shrugged off several of Pikachu's thunderbolts, and Ash returned them. In their rematch, Pikachu manages to faint Gyrados after Claire gets overconfident and sends it in for a wrap only to get hit with several point blank thunderbolts. Pikachu is knocked out by Dragonair immediately after, failing to land a hit. A decent showing, even for a 4x type advantage, but not on the level of legendaries.
Hoenn, Pikachu ohko'd Seaking with Iron Tail, which looks good, but after that Pikachu struggled to destroy an Ice Ball with a full power thunder, which bought Corphish enough time to finish Sealio off. Still not legendary-tier yet.
Sinnoh, Pikachu struggles to KO Electivire after a lucky Static proc and several lucky Paralysis procs, and does some damage to Luxray before going down. Still not a godslayer.

On Regiice,
Regiice was only recently caught, and even in the games the Regis have fairly low levels. Juan's, the 8th gym leader of Hoenn, had higher levels than the Regis.

Actually, I'm watching the Regice battle now to refresh my memory, and other than the first slip, it seems like the slippery ice never bothered Pikachu again. It's as if it wasn't even there.

And this is besides the point, but... Man there's a lot of stuff in this episode that is just poorly written. Other than the ice field never coming into play again, Pikachu uses two iron tails in a row because... it just does? Why would Ash ever not use two iron tails in a row then? Not to mention Pikachu did this while Airborne, as if there was no knockback on either side. And then, while still airborne, Pikachu dodged an Ice Beam. How? It's in the air, it can't move. I can't even with this. Ugh.

Wrong, this is what killed JN as nobody gave a dam crap about Sakuragi's research. JN would have been better when it focus on PWC instead of skipping all the super class battle and dragging Bea all the way to hyper class. I acknowledge that, which is why I said it was an invaluable PIECE. It's contributions to the battle against strong Pokemon are enough that it subsequently struggling to deal with some rando shitmon at the start of the next season doesn't track in any circumstance unless we're going back to my argument that you have to assume either every region gets stronger relative to the last or they just reset, neither of which are good answers.

I'm not going by game canon, I'm going by the reverence legendaries are given the anime. Even if the regis aren't on the level of "big" legends they're still given a level of importance by the show, so defeating one isn't a feat to scoff at and it certainly doesn't justify essentially getting reset by the very beginning of the next season.

Even acknowledging the different in strategy, Pikachu's showing in the Regice fight is still heavily inconsistent with it's performance in the Surskit fight. Even just going by it's hit taking capacity alone, it took an Ice Beam AND a Focus Punch from a legendary and barely even looked phased, in the Surskit fight it got....blown back by an Ice Beam (not even a direct hit) and hit with a Signal Beam and it's out of commission? Even Pikachu ignoring the slippery ice in Regice's battle but being hindered by it in Surskit's is an issue because it PROVES it can work around it no problem. Pikachu only being as durable as the plot demands had been a long standing criticism of the show, so I don't know what we're going to get out of acting like it makes sense in this specific instance. It's just another example of the constant resets.

I had no idea that Dot was actually cool. I figured she was good at knowing Pokemon stuff as Gurumin but didn't have much skill on the field, but no, she's fucking cool. This was a good ass episode.

I wanna also specifically shout out the fact that they had Murdock show his overprotective dynamic with Dot without saying outright what was going on. I'm so used to writers having to include a scene where a character watching explains what they're seeing as if the viewer can't pick up on context clues. Shit like, Murdock showing concern for Dot by being a big softie, while Friede looks on saying "he's always been so protective of her," while Liko overhears. It's not offensive or anything, but when they're confident enough in what they're doing to convey it through action and not dialog, it works really well.

Viola and her Surskit were not established weaklings nobody should ever struggle with, they're experienced trainers that were testing someone they knew had participated in 5 leagues and clearly knew what they were doing. They're not going to fucking use that ice field strategy against little Pierre-kun and his level 5 starter. It's like how you start the BW2 games by beating Cheren with your starter and low level shitters even though Cheren has canonically beaten all the other gym leaders that would've shitstomped you at your current level. Ingame levels and comparative strength are just gameplay elements.

I don't give a flying fuck if Viola was sandbagging or not, Pikachu losing to an "ice field" when it both encountered and subsequently ignored this strategy and then going out to a single glancing blow and then direct hit when it survived multiple direct hits from Pokemon that are, objectively, far higher on the totem pole, under the command of trainers in far more prestigious roles did not, does not, and will fucking never make an ounce of sense.

The problem is that spots of bad writing in long running serialized series can't just be taken in isolation unless they're specifically sequestered off to a dubiously canon special or movie. The Ash that lost to Viola is the same Ash that onw against Brandon, so just dismissing the latter as bad writing doesn't automatically serve to exonerate the former.

If Ghost type moves magically going from affecting normal types to not affecting them can be chalked up to "writers fucked up", then Pikachu magically going from being affected by slippery floor to not being affected to being affected again can be as well. Why are you just purposefully ignoring that the slipping is being mentioned in conjunction with with it going out in 2 (really only 1 and a half) hits when it's taken far more punishment from stronger Pokemon before and kept fighting (including that very same battle where it took both an Ice Beam and a Focus Punch head on and barely even looked phased).

There was some there, since Liko subconsciously looked down on Roy. But then they never did anything more. Just like they showed Sprigatito being jealous and wanting more assertiveness from Liko and never did anything more.

It seems like Horizons is just more goes-nowhere Ash-like trash. Why are they doing this when it should just be a single-generation anime for a generation that's almost over. Are they planning on this being the new Ashime? I was really hoping they'd embrace rotational protagonists, but that might not be the case.

But Liko and Roy don't move with any urgency, they're written as though it's a basic kiddie slice of life anime. Which would be fine if they went all in on that, but its pretty fucked up to be a slow, narrative driven show with very little comedy for six months straight, and then turn into a plotless momster-of-the-week show for several months. These characters haven't been set up to thrive in either premise.

I'm really hoping they wipe the slate clean for gen 10 with new characters and a better idea. Even if this current series turns itself around in a few months, the first portion is so blemished and boring that I can't overlook it.

My favorite moment of Horizons so far is definitely the cliffhanger with Friede and Amethio trapped in the cave with Moltres. The way Liko screamed out for Friede in fear for his safety shook me to the core and broke my heart.

Worse. Journeys had two male leads, which usually leads to better relationship driven episodes. The Ash battles were pretty bad and he lacked any real storyline, but a typical Ash and Goh adventure is as good as "filler" can get in Pokémon. Horizons had an amazing premiere though

The next series will definitively be better for sure, because by then they will actually try something truly new. Something that's truly its own. Unlike Horizons is.
Horizons is a clear beta test, where they're scared shitless of how things will be received because there's no more Ash, so despite on the surface appearing new, shiny and revolutionary ultimately it's all a total sham, it's just all surface level, and after you tune out the shiny new packaging, the flashy lights and loud noises, you can see it's just Ash anime 2.0 movie stretched into a entire series edition featuring worldwide traveling format from the Journeys series but "better paced".
They're trying to have their cake and eat it too and ultimately satisfying no one.

By being there,
He meant to be a hyper class opponent for Ash to defeat, there is no point of him being on Master Eight in place of Tobias if Ash isn't supposed to battle him. The anime turned all the champions into a proxy for Alain and made Ash win in a controversial manner so it can't even be used as a proxy

At the end, Journey got ruined because of all the decisions Anipoke made to protect Alain from losing to Ash.

PWC was carrying, they should have focused entirely on PWC instead of Sakuragi's research. Shudo wanted to focus on things like life and its hardship + beauty, the nuance of society and coming of age. He did that, but then got told he had to keep promoting Ash in a sanitized environment.
Yajima wanted to make a story about a really cool and smart trainer who had a smoking hot girlfriend and got involved in cool battles. But he was forced to try to do that with Ash, who is the last person you think of when you hear the words "cool, smart, smoking hot wife". Ash can maybe pass for cool battles, but you'll never get the kind of complexity and battle of wits like in Jojo and other popular shonens with Ash, he's too spastic.
Tomiyasu likes doing long-form stories and tying things together. But, like Shudo, he was shackled with an episodic nonce of a character who has the memory of a goldfish and the maturity of a Baboon with a fresh turd in its hands. The most you can paint with Ash restraining you is a shit smeared canvas.
