They were never broken.

My team was mostly bug and grass so I got raped. Can't speak for balanced teams.

They are but they should be prologues to actual Gyms.

Still one of my favorite gens but you don't need to lie and exaggerate. The characters, pokemon, and region were goat.

The only problem with HMs is that they were mostly weak. Surf is the best move in the game, they just need to make the other moves better. There are one time HMs like Flash that you can just stuff in the box. They could be easily fixed. The best thing about HMs for me is using your Pokemon as more than battle fodder and giving then another purpose.

I meant in the very beginning of the series.

>still get to use your pokemon for something other than battling
