But you can't just choose May and pick Torchic, because that would give Brendan Mudkip, and in the official ORAS animation May has both Mudkip and Torchic while Brendan has Treecko, so you actually need to play as Brendan and pick Treecko so May can get Torchic for herself
>Gen 4You pick Turtwig cause Chimchar is the most appropriate choice for Barry, they're once again color coded to match and he's a hotheaded guy who likes bruteforcing things.
I also like to pick Lucas cause that gives Dawn Piplup which is a pretty iconic pairing with the anime.

For BW I feel like Hilda is very commonly associated with Tepig and Hilbert is associated with Oshawott, so for the sake of not reusing starters I go with Hilbert.

>Gen 7This is the first games where I don't actually have a set gender in mind, however the starter obviously has to be Rowlet so that Kukui can get Incineroar.
Rowlet probably pairs better with Selene though.
