could you make this guy viable without abilities?

I'm working on a fan game and consider removing abilities, since I really disliked them while replaying Gen3 recently.
Is there any way to make the 1HP guy work without it? I also consider removing items btw.

Not without a complete overhaul, no. Having 1 HP only works because of his ability.

If you want to get rid of abilities but keep Shedinja, my suggestion would be to just give him a workable amount of HP. It completely erases his gimmick, but at least he's usable.

make a custom type that gives it the immunities it would normally have? it would lose STAB on a type, though

Give it moves that are 1.5x stronger than the originals.
E.g., a 120 bp Ghost move to replace Shadow Ball

I would just give it a type that grants its immunities. failing that it can run FEAR if you keep items. I have seen gen 2 rom hacks that use special code to grant it immunities so wonder guard itself isnt truly necesary if it's the tech youre worried about.

no I'm making my own engine, but didn't think about giving it a new type. I wanted to make as few changes to the mons as possible, largely achieving balance through deciding which attacks are available to which mon, kinda like >>55423643 said. Giving it a new type sounds like a good idea but I wonder how to tell the player about it and not make it too weird.

Make it a glass cannon and/or glass toolbox that can give you momentum.

Massive speed, massive attack stats, great support movepool, etc. All its attacks need to do something impactful to make up for dying to anything.

Looking through the ghost and bug options, these all seemed nice for that gimmick.

It would have to be the ultimate speedy glass cannon, on par with Mega Beedrill or attack form Deoxys. Alternatively it could be given a signature move that allows it to be immune to damage for 2 or 3 turns, or a move that activates the Wonder Guard effect.

Give it actual base 1 HP
it wont have one hp but it still be squishy

give it endeavor. it suddenly becomes the ultimate glass cannon, capable of doing 99.9% of any mon's HP in one hit.
i would also boost the hell out of its speed so you can actually get the move off without having to baton pass substitute to it, but that's your call.

Might as well remove it from the game. Everything short of a 100% accuracy priority OHKO move is probably not going to salvage it, unless you fundamentally alter its stats and identity.

by not giving him stronger attacks like earthquake or hyper beam. The learnsets change in every gen so I don't see it as troublesome to change, unlike types or stats, which could confuse players.
