I'd like to see you post a video of you completing Morty's Gym, the trainers on Route 38 and 39, the lighthouse, route 40, and 41, Chuck's Gym, Jasmine's Gym, Route 42, Route 43, Lake of Rage, Team Rocket Hideout, and Pryce's Gym in 5 minutes. Kalos has Lumiose City, Camphrier Town, and Ambrette Town between Gym 1 and 2, Geosenge Town between Gym 2 and 3, Dendemille Town between Gym 6 and 7, and Couriway Town between Gym 7 and 8. Meanwhile Johto has a Gym in every single town/city after Cherrygrove.

If you think it's not counting lighthouse, burned tower, etc then by that logic it's also not counting Parfum Palace, Pokeball Factory, Lysandre Labs, etc

Your image shows exactly what's wrong with Kalos. The early gyms suggest a long, slow-paced game but the middle gyms are all crammed together in quick succession. Compare this to Johto and Unova which have consistent pacing.

SM is much larger than it at around 87 locations SWSH is the smallest region at about 40, but SV's world design makes it incomparable in rating locations. Aside from Galar, the 4 location difference from Kalos isn't really that big of a deal when you realize the three games before BW, GS, RS, and DP, all had locations in the 90-100 range which is a much more noticeable margin than anything that came after.

Clearly Johto and Unova have better pacing than Kalos, as set out in that image. A well-paced game usually has constant and consistent new content. Chrono Trigger, for example, is considered one of the most well paced games in existence, and here's a statistical analysis of the first part of the game that backs this up. The only major break in it is setting up for the peak of the story, which is fairly common in video games and really all fiction. There's arguably a second one in the technically optional and technically non-linear second part of the game, but given how non-linear it is analysis on that is less straightforward. In comparison, Kalos also has two peaks. It's really only Unova that hits close to Chrono Trigger of the three listed here, and that's only if you consider the post-game up to actually becoming champion to be equivalent to Chrono Trigger's second section. Other Pokemon games have some weird issues too, Gen 1's non-linearity in the middle unfortunately makes a lot of the content either samey and boring or skipped for example.

Probably SwSh. The game takes fucking forever getting to the first gym but then after that you get a gym badge basically every 30 minutes since most gyms have a singular small area between them IF that. And before you know it, the game is basically over. Also the story is terrible which isn't really bad pacing but it makes the pacing FEEL worse just because the few things that actually happen as you progress are so pointless.

Okay, I'll come back with amplitude maps for Unova and Kalos then. There's unfortunately too much variance in Johto which I think does negatively impact the game, same reason I wouldn't do Kanto. Maybe I'll do Hoenn instead, it has really solid pacing until the water routes.

Kalos, Hometown, and Faraway place probably shouldn't be on there, for one (the Unova list has the same problem). Every street in Lumiose probably also shouldn't be counted separately (as the Unova list doesn't count them), and several shops probably shouldn't be either but that's more up for debate. Anon, that' stupid. Total locations being higher in Unova and Johto directly mean they are higher quality. Same with consistent amounts of content between gyms. What DOESN'T point to bad quality is the "rushed pacing" criticism OP imagined. It's not like it's cheating anyone of locations since those games have more, and thus the criticism means nothing. Only the consistency really matters, as it feels off-putting to have large swaths of walking between the first couple and then the last five being back to back suddenly. It also fucks up level curve shenanigans and makes it harder for the devs to predict what your level will be at and make gym teams accordingly (yet another common criticism of XY).

Please tell me how "total content" and "consistent pacing" has nothing to do with the game's quality, but yours does.
