Another simple gym prior to this was Norman's, but that one was more about knowing what you're equipped to deal with - it was simple but still a bit elegant.
Math problems have nothing to do with Pokemon or its mechanics, it's purely knowledge you have to aquire outside of the game.
Similarily, a Pokemon gym having a puzzle all about fighting every trainer when nearly every gym in the series prior has had a focus on trying to avoid trainers just feels kind of weird and clunky.
I don't think it's a surprise that these two got major revisions in Platinum.

I'm sure it's not something they would have tried to address if Diamond and Pearl had taken longer to come out.
