It was handled fine. They gave an explanation that's solid enough to have a general frame of their origin but vague enough to leave the specifics of their origin up to speculation depending on how you decide to put the pieces together. Whether Imaginary, from a different time, or from an alternate timeline altogether, it doesn't really matter in the end anyways.
