It could work but it would require an overhaul of its combat system. The gameplay needs to revolve around group play. It can’t just be like the single player games, but you can see other players and chat with them and trade with them. You need objectives that one player can’t do on their own.

Just slap turn order manipulation and make battles accept any amount of participant on both side.
Or copy Wizard 101, iirc that one that even letting people join your battle mid-fight.

Nintendo's never done an MMO for a mainline series. Does not seem their style. DLC/expansions would not be enough for it, they like to entirely revamp the next iteration of a game too much for it to work long term.
